Hello Everyone I am in the mist of purchasing a doodle and the breeder has sent me the cert of the parents the dam has a rating of "fair" for prelim from 2005 test for the hips. I am spending good money on this pup and would like to know if I should procedd with the purchase of this pup. Please give me some advice.
First of all, great news you are purchasing from a breeder that does hip testing. This is extrememly improtant and it is a great first sign as to the reputation of your breeder.
What is the rating of the sire? If the dam is fair, that is not bad, but if it were my breeding program I would only mate to a sire with "good", or preferebly "excellent". If the prelims were done in 2005 (prelims are called that because the dog was under two years old which is required for an official rating) have they gone ahead and got her final test? I would hope they did, as some dogs improve with as they reach full maturity. If they didnt, I would want to know why? Or did they score worse? Usually a "fair" rating would be redone at maturity in hopes they improved.
Since you seemed interested in having testing done on the parents to ensure you get the highest probability of a healthy puppy, did they also test for luxating patella? vWd, thyroid, eys (CERF), etc...

The sire is "Excellent" and I did not asked if they retested the dam. I was sent a "cannine eye registration foundation" &"orthopedic foundation for animals, inc" cert the eye one just says info not much detail regard test and the other says that it is Normal and no evidence of congential heart disease, but it is from 2005.
They mentioned in an email that the dam is VonWillebrand & Brucellosis negative and sire is also Brucellosis negative & thyroid normal and sent me cert of DNA profile from the AKC for sire only. No paper work on the VonWillebrand ,Brucellosis, thyroid or heart(for sire). I don;t know if i should be worried or not...

Thanks for all the feedback guys, its so hard to make sure that you are getting a good dog from a reputable breeder since there is soo many to choose from its exhausting!!
Hi Gina,
Todd is correct, fair is a passing and acceptable score. It is suggested that you breed a fair with a Good or excellent. BTW patellas only need to be done on mini's, not on standards. Best wishes!!
At what age did the female receive her grading of FAIR? If it was done close to the second birthday they might not have redone it at 2 years of age. The OFA prelim will have an age in months listed on it.
