Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
So in light of some of the recent discussions on DK about out of control puppies and people having a difficult time with their doodles, I wanted to tell you all a funny story from last night.
Peri's breeder is on Facebook and we keep in touch constantly on there (she also lives in my area). Last night she posted a status of "the puppies have discovered our toilet paper"...and follow up posts entitled "when doodle puppies go insane" had photos of them rolling it around the living room, photos of them playing with those crazy doodle mouths/teeth showing, her putting her drapes over furniture so they couldn't bite them, etc... It literally looked like a complete mad house. If I had her permission, I would post some here, but I am sure ALL of you can probably relate to this, right?? It was really hilarious!
The reason for my post is to serve as yet another reminder that this is pretty normal doodle behavior - and if you never experienced it, you have a very rare, relaxed doodle! Last night I posted a response to the breeder about me remembering these days and sitting on the floor crying with Peri! Peri's breeder commented that "at least you only had one!". LOL!
So, to all you new puppy owners: Hang in there, this is normal and yes, it gets better with training, age and patience.
And all of us veterans: Remember those days???? I don't particularly miss them, but Peri sure was a cutey back then....

Memory lane. I forgot about the toilet paper on top on the toilet, getting garbage cans with lids. I may have to look for the tiny chewed area in my comforter. Luca shorted out the automatic bed cord twice. And my arms, well let's not go there. I got Calla when was a lot wiser. She also was 4 months, a big difference. But I do remember sitting on the porch with her and realizing she was gnawing her way through the wood of the porch. And I did like those teak coasters. And so it went. The good word is it did go.
Bear is still like that and he will be 5 this year :) But I would not have it any other way :) I have to tell you the toilet paper thing is a poodle trait :) When I got my first toy poodle, his name was PJ, I came home after work to find the toilet paper roll completely unrolled :) LOL!!!! I laughed so hard because PJ just looked at me like "look what I did mommy!!!"
I wonder if it's one of those things like childbirth where you tend to forget the "puppy nightmare" as they get older. I'm having trouble remembering any seriously naughty or crazy puppy behavior from the Doods.....other than Murph's over the top reactiveness (but that happened later). Hmmmm perhaps they were perfect...no way...it must be my memory.
I remember one of the first purchases was new garbage cans for the bathrooms with lids! I also remember thinking I will never be able to put the tp back on the roller ever again. Gavin showed his puppy side for the first time in a while yesterday when he stole a bean bag from the neighbours during a game they were playing. He ran off with it and I knew I was in for some fun when he bowed down with bean bag in mouth and showed me the whites of his eyes. After I chased his around the yard for 5 minutes (much to the delight and amusment of all on-lookers) he gave it up and rolled over on his back for a tummy scub. Too cute to get mad at still.
I often think the doodle could easily learn how to get in more trouble but I'm not showing them. Certainly they could open cabinets. They could also push the laundry basket containing their toys out of the bedroom doorway, which is how I'm keeping them with me at night now. The could move chairs to get up on things. But they don't and I'm not showing them : )
Amen to that. Peri jumped up last night and put two paws around a door handle and was mimicking how we open doors. We have no levers in our house because she can open them. I totally get how these doods are good candidates for therapy work.
I had a Lab who literally ate my bed. I had dogs who ate the furniture and were weapons of mass destruction, this was all before the wonderful crate. Riley went through some toilet rolls and a few pairs of shoes, he loved the Gucci and Prada ones best (expensive taste) The two rugs ended up in the bin. New puppy owners need to know that all that is normal puppy behavior and whenever these things happened I blamed myself for allowing them to happen. It can be summed up thus: More exercise and more crate with lots of training thrown in for good measure is my advice for all new Doodle Puppy owners
Thanks, Allyson, for a cute story and the reminder that we have all been there :)
