It seems that many of our doodles are living with feline family members. Below is a photo of Jackdoodle with my 14 year old Angora, Dinah, perched on the chair behind him. I'm wondering how many other DK members have kitties; maybe we should start a "Doodles & Cats" group. I'm sure there are some funny & cute stories about how our doodles interact with their feline brothers & sisters...anyone?
I didn't ' realize that. It is interesting. I'll have to watch as Hudson and Charlie start to get to know one another. So far, Charlie is hanging out in his own bedroom....eating, drinking, peeing and pooping. We had a sunny day here so he was very happy to stretch out on one of the decks of his condo in a sun beam. The couple of times Hudson has wandered into the bedroom - to check out what Charlie is eating - there has been very little fuss except for the puffy tail syndrom.
I had kept Dinah in a separate bedroom for awhile after I got her, too; she was just a kitten, and my poodle was waaay too interested in her. After a couple of weeks, we decided to just let them "have at it." There was about half an hour of hissing, mrowing, and wild chasing before the dog got worn out and the cat figured out that she could easily get away by just running under my bed. And there was peace ever after, lol.
I can't wait to see a picture of Charlie!
Not a cat person myself but my daughters each brought one home...LOL
They hang out with the doodles when they feel like it, otherwise they head to the basement (only
doodle free zone here!).
Amelia my cat who thinks she is the queen of the house (she is when I am not home) wants nothing to do with Cali. In fact she will walk the far width of the room so as to not get too close to the DOG!! How dare us!!! I am not sure treats are going to help..... lol
Karen - your cat is beautiful. I would love to have a kitty for Murphy. I don't think I have room for another doodle but I would love for him to have a special animal brother. I wanted to find a kitty while Murphy was still a puppy. I thought that would be the best time. It's funny that you started this tread - I was just thinking about a kitty this afternoon.
A lot of shelters (the good, no-kill private ones) do dog/cat testing to see if one will get along with the other. My cat always had all her claws, so that helped a lot when my poodle got too rambunctious, lol. And I always made sure that Dinah had access to a place the dog couldn't follow her, such as under a bed, in a closet, etc. My dogs & cat have always had free run of the house when no-one's home, and they have always been fine. I got Dinah for much the same reasons you're thinking of getting a kitty...I was working full-time, and my poodle was alone so much. I knew I couldn't handle another dog, for a number of reasons, but I wanted Pawla to have a companion. Now Dinah is Jack's companion. I'm sure she enjoyed her 4 months as an "only" pet between Pawla & Jackdoodle! But they're fine together, and I feel better knowing they have each other when nobody's home.
Meg - this is exactly what I just did. I had been in touch with many of the different rescues in my area over the last month and just yesterday ended up adopting a 6 year old male cat. He is definately not afraid of Hudson, but I don't know his full history so we are making it up as we go. It will take a while but Hudson is very good - he isn't obsessed with where the cat is although when I'm carrying Charlie, Hudson is trying to sniff his butt! I know we have several weeks of adjustment ahead but I am glad that I got the cat. As with both you and Karen, I am away during the day and I think they will be good company for one another - eventually!
We have 2 indoor cats, Mac and Pinky (16 and 3) with claws, and there are 3 orphan ferral cats (same litter) who adopted us. (We tried to find them homes when they were little, to no avail --- we live in a condo community and a kill county), so we tricked each one, had them fixed, shots, ears clipped and released -- 2 yrs ago! -- they are on the patio every morning and evening for grub--I guess they're ours) Anyway we lost our 11 yr old LD in August, so Bisbee was "last in" 5 mo old---9 mos now, third in pecking order per the cats -- he thinks he #1, so do I)...Mac schooled him day-one and everyone get's along beautifully.... although we have found a few "shed" claws in the beard lol.....I think doodles are great cat companions naturally!
I would definitely join a doodle and cats group! I actually just posted a discussion on the puppy madness group as for advice on how to introduce my new puppy to the existing cats! I pick up Lizzie on January 30th and she will be coming home to two feline siblings, both declawed. They're not really sure what's about to happen.....
