AA couple days ago I took Webster and Charlotte down to my mom's house.  I put them in the backyard not realizing that it was already occupied by other curly haired residents, my mom's alpacas.  The alpacas don't like dogs, especially the mama alpacas with their babies.  They will usually avoid or even run off a dog - especially a dog they don't know.  Webster and Charlotte had never been in with the alpacas (they are usually in the pasture - not the backyard), so I fully expected the "girls" to be bothered by my dogs.  To my amazement, they accepted my dogs without blinking - even allowing them to sniff their butts and run around with the babies.  I really think that this is because alpacas are sight animals and my doodles looked like alpacas.

 

Did you know THEY were here?  I thought this was the DOG yard.....

 

 

Is that good?  Will you share?  Mrs. Alpaca, is there enough for us?

She's bred alpacas for 9 years now.  They are used for their fiber (fleece), some people want them for pets, and they provide an excellent tax write-off for someone with land.  They are very pleasant animals, easy to handle, and safe for kids.

Sorry about my ignorance, but why are they a good tax write off? Is that because your mom breeds them. Do you sell the fiber? I am assuming she sells them. I had no idea about having one as a pet. Just never heard about it. If I am not being too noisy.....how much would one cost? Wow. You learn something new every day. I was thinking they were the ones that spit on you.

I'm not an expert but I think it is because having an alpaca qualifies you as a "farm" so anything you purchase for the "farm" (equipment, fencing, etc) is deductable.  I'm probably not even using correct terminology - I'm not the tax person around here :-)

The economy has hit the alpaca market (just like everything else) so prices are a lot lower then they used to be.  Now, they cost from $500 - $5000, depending on type, gender, age, color, etc. 

They can spit, but I like to say that alpacas spit like dogs bite.  Not all dogs bite and usually they have a reason.  Not all alpacas spit, and usually spitting occurs between alpacas and the people get caught in the crossfire.

Jennifer, you are right.  Alpaca's are considered livestock.  There is additional deductions for operating a farm vs just having land.

I know in our area if you have a certain amount of land you have to have a "grazing animal" or you are hit an absurd tax. I'm sure the alpacas do the same for your mom.

do doodles count as grazing??  All mine do is eat the grass.. I should call the city for a tax refund!

This is soo cute! Thank you for posting these pictures. Years ago we knew someone whose daughters brought her a baby alpaca for. Surprise birthday present. They transported it in their car! So darling!
