Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
The first 4 months of 2015 have been very busy for DRC and Doodle rescue. With many challenging cases including numerous puppy mill/shelter doodles with a multitude of health issues throughout North America, and a $5000 plus emergency bloat surgery that in spite of the heroic efforts of DRC volunteers, ended tragically. Last month alone, a total of 10 shelter doodles came into our program in desperate need of extensive veterinary care and behavioral rehabilitation.
In the wake of these recent events, DRC is reaching out to you; our incredible Doodle rescue family, supporters and cheerleaders, for assistance with our latest additions.
INTRODUCING CHARLIE
Charlie is a barely 2 year old, miniature Labradoodle rescued from Maricopa County Animal Control in Arizona. He had been picked up as a stray in horrible condition and had an old leg injury that had never been addressed by his original owners. The muscles were atrophied and the leg rendered useless. When Charlie's owners were located by authorities, they told the shelter he was a miniature Labradoodle they had spent thousands of dollars to purchase. They said they didn't have the funds to repair his injury or continue to care for him and told the shelter to "just put him down."
That's when DRC was contacted.
Charlie came into the DRC program filthy, emaciated being 10 lbs. underweight at intake, completely matted, riddled with intestinal parasites and fleas, in excruciating pain and deathly sick with pneumonia in both of his lungs.
Vets were initially not optimistic that he would survive.
But this adorable, sweet, horribly neglected baby boy is a fighter. His eyes pleadingly spoke to us saying "Please give me a chance. I'm just a baby and have been through so much." Two weeks at the vet's office in quarantine on IV antibiotics and pain killers, and Charlie made a MIRACULOUS recovery from his pneumonia. Still too underweight for surgery, we have spent the last 3 weeks, keeping his pain at bay with medication as we try to get his weight up, so that we can surgically address his badly injured leg.
We are not yet certain that it can be saved. But we are determined to try.
In order to ensure that Charlie gets only the very best pre and post surgical care, our own Judy and Richard Crowe in SoCal, are scheduled to pick him up in AZ and get him to our orthopedic vets in Southern California.
Cost for Charlie's complete care so far has been over $1200......Estimated cost for his pending surgery is $2800.
Charlie and his life are worth every penny. We will keep you all posted on Charlie's progress and cannot even begin to express how much we appreciate your help and generosity on behalf of this sweet boy.
MEET MARTIN, HERSHEY, PANCAKE & LIZZIE - THE NEBRASKA 4 AND OUR OTHER SHELTER RESCUES
These beautiful puppy mill survivors came to DRC through our wonderful friends at Nebraska Humane. They are all currently being fostered, vetted, groomed, evaluated and socialized with our own Tina Kappmeyer in Iowa and will be ready for adoption in the next few weeks. These pups arrived filthy, matted, with numerous eye, ear, skin, and digestive issues and in desperate need of vet care, grooming and socialization. (Read Tina's brief blog about the NE 4 here.)
Three other shelter doodles, Penny Lane, Loki and Willow also came to DRC last month through our friends at a central Illinois shelter.
With costs averaging $800 per pup, DRC is bound and determined to give MARTIN, HERSHEY, PANCAKE, LIZZIE, PENNY LANE, LOKI AND WILLOW the very best care we possibly can until they are ready for their forever homes and families. Your kindness and generosity will enable us to continue providing for these beautiful puppy mill and shelter survivors and others currently finding their way to safe haven with Doodle Rescue Collective Inc.
From the bottom of our collective hearts, we thank you all so much, for your ongoing, unrelenting and unconditional friendship, generosity and support...... We truly could not do what we do, without each and every one of you.
We are humbled and honored to be amongst heroes and as always, are eternally grateful, to and for, our incredible DRC Family!
