Well, I made a comment in the Photography Group about buying a new smart phone since Verizon, my carrier, is switching data plans and, of course, things will get more expensive if I wait to buy a new phone. I need to do this before the 28th. It started lots of comments, some of which may be of more general interest.

There are days when I think I'll go back to a dumb phone that only does what a phone is supposed to do. But I do sometimes use the camera. I do use my phones GPS and occasionally I look something up. I do not</ strong> text. If I want to communicate I call and speak to the person or leave a message. How quaint.

I will copy others my and others comments as replies and maybe we'll have more of a discussion.

UPDATE: I Love my Samsung Galaxy S3. SUPER SMART!

Aol's article is pretty much the same.

It's only one phone but scary. Someone accused Samsung of copying Apple since they had similar exploding problem(s) a while back : )

None of the young people I know have land lines either.  We are seriously considering getting rid of ours,  The only calls we get on it anymore are ads!

I still like the security and reliability of having both. I actually have two land  lines but when I stop working altogether I will go down to one. How do you get faxes, or don't you?

u do faxes?  if I need to send a document, i scan it with my printer, send via email as a pdf.  i'm sure my printer/computer will do fax, but my landline is thru Vonage which I love.  However, setting up a fax situation with a Vonage box, I have no idea and I dont need fax so there you go.

Yes, I do get and send faxes, mostly for work but from home.

F - I just got into this conversation.  You might check out faxbetter.com.  They have a freebie efax number, or you can pay $8/per or something and have a permanent number.  You can send and receive faxes in your email this way.  I have been using it for over a year.  May be an option for you.

Thanks. Faxes are not a problem to send or receive right now but this may be a solution later on.

OK--here's a Verizon promo for those of you with Verizon . . . We were paying way too much for phone/DSL services at our vacation house. I wound up getting a Droid with a hot spot -- extra $20 per month but I was then able to do away with the DSL and my hot spot works great. We also did away with our land line and got the Verizon Home Phone Connect. You plug the unit into the phone jack and connect it to your own wireless phones (We have a base unit with 4 phones--you know, the kind you buy at Costco). The Home phone connect service charge is $19.99 month-unlimited calling. It includes call forwarding, etc. We are very happy with the service and you can't beat the price . . .

This home phone connect sounds very interesting. Lots of thinking to do. I have Verizon for land lines x2, TV with free DVR and one additional box, internet, and cell pone service. All told I spend about $200.

holy cow! all this would not be possible where I live.  We do however have an expensive cable bill.....gotta have certain channels for DH.   On one hand its expensive, on the other considering how much he loves the tv, its cheap entertainment, and I always know where to find him!

Here's something I just found in rereading the Verizon articles:

Under Share Everything, Verizon will stop charging extra for letting devices act as mobile Wi-Fi hot spots. So a customer with a recent smart phone could use it to connect a tablet to the Internet, without paying the extra $10 per month for a tablet.

Don't know how or if that would affect you  and Nancie or not.
