I don't watch TV at all. When I turned it on the other day Hattie was blown away! She backed up and stared and was mesmerized! She thought the people were real and then kind of lost interest. Someone mentioned to me they make DVD's for dogs to keep them entertained. Since my house is silent all day when I am at work, I was wondering if you all think this is a bad thing for a dog-silence I mean, for so much of the day. Should I be leaving the radio or tv on for her? Has anyone purchased a DVD for their dog to keep them entertained and did they really watch it?

I often leave the radio on for Gavin if we are going to be away for a while.  Why?  I guess because my dad always left the radio on in the barn for the horses and cats.  I also noticed that my friend who has a hobby farm with cows, pig and donkeys leaves the radio on for them.  The kennel where I have boarded Gavin also leaves the radio on for the dogs during the night.  Must be something to it?
We leave the radio on for Riley if we leave him home alone.  It's just something we have always done for the dogs.  I'm not sure if it helps but I feel it must make him feel that he is not so alone.  (We leave talk radio on and not music).
We have a CD called Through a Dog's Ear. It is classical piano music played slowly and calms the dogs. We used to use it when we had four dogs and some needed the calming factor. We used it when Owen was a puppy all of the time. Now we leave the TV on more often than turn on their CD. No reason why.
I have something like this too. If I put it on while I'm at home it puts me right to sleep. What does that mean???
The CD cover says to never play it in the car because it could cause drowsiness! Haha. I guess they don't want the driver to fall asleep just to calm the anxious doggy in the car.
We often leave the tv on simply because it makes a white noise so some outside noises might be muffled as well as we think we are tricking the dogs into thinking we are home (this is a joke because they see us leave :-}
I always leave the TV on for my two when I leave the house. I never leave it on the Animal Planet channel, because that one can make them bark :) They don't like soaps either....just kidding. I just leave it on for noise.
I leave it on HGTV... no violence or harsh words or scary music. I'm sure they are bored to tears but I figure it keeps them company.
You may have thought of the best idea yet!
My friend leaves her TV on for her dog.  I never really thought about it until now but it probably wouldn't hurt.
We leave the tv on for Parker...usually on hbo family or animal planet lol
Mine do NOT notice TV.  I think that's why they like to be so annoying WHILE we watch TV because they figure we are bored and staring off into space =)
