Ear Infections

Hi. I have a 16 week old ALD & I clean his ears 2 times a week, I use the ProEar line. He does have lots of wax mixed with dirt (he's a digger) & last week I was getting that black gunk & took him to the vet. Double Ear infection. BUT with no odor & the other ear had nothing the night before, when I cleaned his ears. The vet we saw (mine was on vacation) said I probably caused this cleaning his ears too often & that all dogs only should have their ears cleaned 1 time a month. Now everything I've read about Doodles tells me to his ears often at least once a week. I even hold them on top of his head (after cleaning) in a scrunchie for about 30 minutes. Then I put a small amount of dog ear powder in them.

Any advice is appreciated!!!

I clean mine once a week with Malaseb flush and they've never had an ear infection.

Unfortunately my vet cannot get the Malaseb now either. She did tell me other flushes are available but I don't know the name. You might want to check with your vet.

I use that same cleaner, I clean the ears of my two after a bath, if they get wet, or I notice a build up. I like the cleaner alot, Buddy has ony had two infections in 4 years, and he is more prone to allergies, and Kona at two has never had an infection.

we check ours once a week but only clean using baby wipes if dirty then follow up with thornit powder

My vet told me to clean ears every three days and to avoid the powder. She said he has quite a bit of hair inside the ear canal and the powder would just cake. I do pluck the hair that I can get to but there is more farther in. We're able to flop his ears back so he gets air after cleaning. Our puppy is 21 weeks and is also an ALD. No ear infections so far.

Lucy has had 1 bad ear infection only in one ear. It seemed like it came over night. Her ears were/are always clean. I tried everything in them including antibiotic, but nothing cleared them up. My groomer told me to use this vinegar/rubbing alcohol solution. I did that and cont. to use it now and then when I think she needs it and she has been clear of infections since. Don't ask me the mixture b/c I have forgotten it, maybe someone else has the exact meas., I just mix it together and soak a cotton ball with it. I put the cotton ball in her ear, put the flap down and massage the ear until I think the solution has gotten the whole way in. Take the cotton ball out, usually Lucy shakes her head and it flies out before I can take it out. Then I soak another cotton ball, squeese it out and wipe her ear out as far down as I can get. She doesn't mind this at all. Her ears and nice and clean and pink afterwards. Don't know if this will help, but it works for me. Good Luck

I know a human who cleaned her daughter's ears too often, according to the pediatrician. She was causing ear problems.

Try Epi-Otic. Been using it for years, a lot of other poodle & poo-mix owners swear by it, too.

Hi...I am brand new to this sight. We have a labradoodle who is 4 years old. She came with two horrible ear infections and was on antibiotics twice. I was told to clean her ears 3 times a week. I do it M, W and F. I don't use the powder. I use a liquid called Oticalm . Also, I was told that you need to pull the inner hair out of the ear. This is a poodle trait and pulling it out is part of a poodle grooming. I don't do that very often though...Only a few times a year, but I am faithful to the liquid cleaner. She hasn't had an ear infection in almost 4 years and her ears never smell. I squeeze a little liquid in both ears and massage where the ear canal is...

I only clean the ears once in a while and if I think he needs it. I really check after he has been groomed to make sure everything is dry etc. I am alert to the smell of infected ears also.
