Poodles and Poodle mixes with non-shedding coats (as well as other similar breeds) are all prone to ear infections. This is something that any good breeder and any rescue placing these dogs should be talking about with owners. We have tons and tons of info about ear infections and ear maintenance here.
Here are a couple: http://www.doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/ear-infections-4

My last doodle, Zak, always had ear infections!  She absolutely hated water, never swam at all but always seemed to get an ear infection.  As Karen said, there are lots of discussions on this topic.  For Zak, after several vet visits to get antibiotics, I bought "Pro-Otic" and once a week, I put it in her ears.  She absolutely hated it, but after that I didn't have to bring her to the vet.  I live in Canada, so I'm not sure if it's available in USA but there is definitely something similar!  My Myla, is a total swimmer and is very hard to get out of the water and has never had an ear infection.  So weird, but I still carry "Pro-Otic" with me all the time.  Just so you know, Pro-Otic is a prevention - if your doodle has an infection, it will not help - you will need to get antibiotics to clear the infection.

It's a cleaning and drying agent. I used one called Epi-Otic for many years. As you said, it's for maintenance and prevention, to keep them from getting ear infections, but it won;t get rid of one once they have it.
