It looks like there are quite a few of us who have just felt and earthquake.  It's a first for me.  DH and I were sitting here, each on our own computers.  We first heard something strange, and then he went to look for the dogs...thought they were into something.  Then he asked me "what's that shaking"?  The whole house was shaking!  It actually lasted for about 30 seconds.  I said I thought it was either an EQ or we were both losing our minds.  We got the Doods and ran downstairs....just in case.  They seemed to sense that there was something wrong.  Anyway, it was over quickly.  It sounds like this was up and down the East Coast.  Who else felt this....and how did your Doodles react?  Hopefully those closer to the epicenter are all fine.

OMD...we felt it big time here in southern PA. I was on the computer too and Fudge was napping. She stood straight up and I turned to her and said, "What is happening?" I am so unprepared at all times and have never experienced anything to this magnitude and obviously thought Fudge might know what to do. We went outside and called the DH to see if I was nuts...he said yes, but he felt it too in Maryland.

I felt it up here in DC and I work at the Pentagon so you can just imagine what everyone here was thinking... get out of the building!!!!  Quite the experience...  I've lived here my whole life and never felt one that strong here; just crazy.  Just what we need, an earthquake and possibly hurricane all in one week!!

Daddy was home with Jake and said he jumped up looking around like WTD? until he realized what was happening and he pulled Jake under the desk, just in case.  Glad Jake wasn't home alone!

Wow I can only imagine how frightening this would be at the Pentagon.  Did they actually evacuate?

I saw some pics on Military.com of the Pentagon evacuation!

No.  People took it upon themselves to evacuate when they first felt the tremors but we were told to stay put... about 10 minutes after the fact so you can imagine how many people got outside first (~23,000 people work here).  There were some burst water pipes and certain corridors are closed down due to flooding, but nothing evacuated.  Although many people did just decide to leave early for the day... I wish I was one but darn public transportation is now all slow so might as well wait it out!
Heather, I'm just so glad that you're okay....I'd be scared to death.

According to the NY Times, the epicenter was in VA, and the magnitude was 5.9.

WOW!  A 5.9 in Virginia!  That is really unusual.  We get them frequently in California, especially where we live (near the San Andreas fault), but pretty unusual in Virginia.

More info. Apparently it was felt as far west as Detroit, largest earthquake since 1897!

Hope all our East coast friends are safe!

WOW!   Nothing here in NH....but sounds like a pretty scary thing.....for those East Coasters who are not used to such events!
I'm glad to hear that all of you responding are OK. I hope there's no major damage for any of you.
Felt it here in Chapel Hill, NC.  The doods and I were laying on the bed, watching TV and the bed started shaking.  Webber and Seda didn't flinch.  Since I was raised in Southern California, I knew what it was.  Never have felt one in North Carolina. My neighbor has friends in Boston that felt it.
