Hi everybody,

I took Oscar to the beach today and he ate the whole shell of the huge King Crab :( I took him of the leash and was unable to catch him, since he thought it was a game. I just gave up, sat down and waited patiently for him to finish his treat. I am little scared that something may happen to him. Is there anything I should watch for? Is he going to be ok? He seems fine and is sleeping right now.

Thank you. I appreciate any insights.

Crab shells are very hard-similar to bone and I would be concerned about it causing a puncture or blockage. You may be at the watch and wait stage now, so keep a close eye on him for any signs of distress, vomiting, blood in vomit or stool,  not having a bowel movement, etc.  There's also the possibility of him being exposed to bacteria in a rotting crab.   Do you have an emergency vet available if need be?

Good advice.

Yes, I do. He seems fine for now, but I am paying attention. Thank you so much!

There have also been reports of toxic crabs in certain areas: http://www.mycentraljersey.com/article/20131003/NJNEWS20/310030015/

People do crazy things. I guess doodles do too.

Here's hoping for a very uneventful night :(

I'm glad to hear he is doing well and hope he continues to do so! He must have thought he hit the jackpot with that crab! Little rascal!
