I really like to share information as much a possible. Jack had another follow-up at the University of FLa Cardiology Department yesterday. Jack has Mitral Valve Disease and is followed closely by Cardiology. One of the things we discussed yesterday is the myriad of supplements available to both humans and canines.
In his opinion, and again, it is his professional opinion based on his years of study that CoQ10 has not been proven effective in canines like it has in humans however, fish oil does seem to help.
This was his recommendation for Jack, who is 17.5 pounds. It is easy for you to figure out the proper dosing for you dog based on the recommended 40 Mg/KG for EPA and 25 MG/KG for DHA.
Below is a cut and copy of his email. Again, you have to do what you think is best and what has been discussed with your vet, I never had any idea what dose I should give Jack.. Also, he was pretty adamant that when fish oil is exposed to the air, it starts to denature and isn't effective. His recommendation was to give it in a pill or if you use a pump and bottle, make sure the bottle has a bag in it that shrinks up when you pump the oil out limiting air exposure.
Regarding the omega 3 fatty acids, the dose is 40 mg/kg EPA and 25 mg/kg DHA. As Jack weighs 7.7 kg that is 308 mg EPA and 192.5 mg DHA.
You may not get exactly that ratio or amount but overdosing a bit is not a problem.
I hope this helps someone.

I just read this and now think I’m overdosing my Ruby on fish oil. She weighs 15.5 pounds so should get roughly 210 mg EPA and 175 mg DHA right? I’m giving her my fish oil pill which is 350 mg EPA, 450 mg DHA and 50 mg DPA. Wondering if I need to switch and buy something just for her. I never knew how much to give her either obviously. :(
