For Heartguard, we get the "Inteceptor" RX from our vet and order it from Petmeds.  The vet requires a yearly heartworm test (bloodtest) before they renew the script.  As for fleas and ticks, we use Frontline Plus.  We order that on line.  We did try Advantix at one time but went back to Frontline Plus.  We understand that Frontline Plus does not repel fleas and ticks but kills them.  We are not crazy about putting these chemicals on our dogs but Fleas and Ticks are rampant in our area so the once a month application is better than damage from fleas and ticks.  We administer the Inteceptor on the 1st of the month and the Frontline Plus on the 15th of the month.  We used to do both on the 1st and one of our Doodles had a funny reaction.

I like K9 Advantix.  One caution with this particular version of the product--cats.  If your cats sleep and lick your dog, do not use the product.  I have cats but they certainly do not bathe my dogs.  We have had great success with K9 Advantix.

I also think you need to consider your location.  It seems to me that different states, with different types of tick problems use different products.  For example, in Ohio, we do not  have the severity of the tiny deer ticks as they do on the East Coast, although we have a horrible Wood Tick problem--so this product works well for us.

Start now, start early, the ticks are already hungry.  My puppy was about your age when he got his first tick and it was March  :(

Agree with Gail+Kathleen.  We also use Inteceptor for heart worm, and you need to have your dogs tested to make sure they do not have heart worm before starting the medication.  We also use Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks, althought he vet said you do not need Frontline when it is not tick season.  Advantix is fine for fleas (which we don't have thankfully) but for ticks you need the stronger meds.  We also spread out the heart worm and the Frontline.  By the way, ticks also like people, and we don't take any medication, so watch out when you are out in nature.  I had three ticks on me last week.

We use Heartgard and Frontline Plus.
I use Comfortis (tablet form) for fleas once a month and Sentinel also once a month for heartworm.  When we go to areas that have ticks then I apply the Front Line Plus.  I think now after reading I am gong to change to the Advantix for the tick prevention.
I used to use Heartguard but the vet. just gave us Iverheart Plus. We use Frontline Plus for Flee & Ticks on Bindi & I get it online ay Petco. They have the cheapest price. We were just at the vet. office and he said the flee & tick medicine he hates the most is Frontline Plus. He said he doesn't like the chemicals in it. He said he recommends Vectra (which you can only get from a vet. from what I've looked up) He said a close second is Advantix. I still have 4 months of Frontline Plus left so I am going to continue with taht for now.
Our vets recommend Frontline Plus.    Since we just got Maddie last Sept, this will be the first time using it.
Xena's on Interceptor to prevent heartworm. She was on Frontline Plus but after taking her off leash hiking in Nov 2 yrs ago (we had several days of freezing weather too) she came home with 8+ ticks on her. It was so nasty. The vet changed her to Vectra 3D  which wont even allow the ticks to embed - it actually repels them. She hasnt had one since and we have a ton of deer in & around our yard all the time.
I ordered the Frontline Plus - but now I'm thinking of cancelling and getting the Advantix because it repels mosquitos....their bad in our area.
