Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone,

I was looking a breeder's website (not my breeder) but it stated that anyone who purchased a puppy from them would invalidate their health guarantee  warranty by giving their puppy nexguard, bravecto, comfortis  and any internal flea prevention.  I thought that was strange.  It stated due to reports regarding kidney and liver damage.  I haven't heard this before.

It's a large vet office - there are 5 vets. My vet owns it. I think he was speaking collectively. There is a second vet practice that he also owns somewhere. I'm not sure about that one. But if each one of the 5 vets saw 5 dogs a day 5 days a week for a year that's 6500 dogs. He might be exaggerating, but it's a very busy practice so I wouldn't be surprised if there are that many patients.

I was thinking that "he has 6000-7000 dogs on" meant they were all his patients, not the practice collectively. Yes, 5 doctors makes much more sense.

I would be worried if he had that many patients! He spends so much time with me each time I'm there I would actually be surprised if he gets through 5 a day himself. But I love him. I think he's very well educated and current on medicine. He always addresses my concerns at length. He's expensive though. I really hope I'm paying for quality there.

My vet is one of the two owners of a very busy 7 vet practice, and he stopped seeing new patients a couple of years ago. Solely so that he could continue to spend a lot of time with the ones he already has, for which I'm very grateful.

My vet is now carrying ParaDefense Advanced.  It  has the same ingredients as Advantix II.  It is supposed to not only kill but repel fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies, and lice.  She went to this because she felt that most of her clients were not also using a heart worm preventive and she feels because it repels mosquitoes, this could be a one stop preventive.  I used it on Ned and Charlie several times - and it might be a coincidence but all three times Charlie got sores on his skin. Once was bad enough that it was like a burn but without loss of hair.

What do you guys think?

It sounds like Charlie is sensitive to that product. I would use some other kind of preventatives for him. All three times is not a coincidence.

I'm wondering if I should give him an internal rather than a topical.  Maybe Charlie is an Aussie doodle instead of an Australian labradoodle!?

Well, it probably would be a good idea to run a DNA test on him just so you are aware of what breeds are there, for possible future health issues that might come up. But it's ivermectin that many Aussies have reactions to, and I'm pretty sure there isn't any topical form of ivermectin. So that can't be the cause of the sores/burns.
I don;t think there are any oral prevents that cover HW, fleas and ticks other than the three that some of us are concerned about giving. However, it appears that many others are using those without any ill effects, so that would be up to you if you wanted to try it.

I should DNA him.  I mostly feel that is "cheating" -- love your dog for himself, not the status of him being a xxxx.  I also put that DNA test money into rescue rather than satisfying my own curiosity.  But, I will consider it for Charlie - or just give him good old Frontline Plus and Heart Guard.

I don't think that knowing what the breed mix is would affect your feelings for him. It wouldn't have affected mine if I'd done it with Jack. I don't think any particular mix of breeds confers more status than any others, lol. A mixed breed dog is a ixed breed dog, regardless of what the mix is.
I'm debating switching Jasper to Heartgard and Frontline too. Giving that one little Sentinel pill every month is nice, but I was reading about ticks and Jasper is always under the bushes and eating yard trash and trying to catch anything that moves, and I would not put it past him to be the first dog I've ever owned to show me what a tick looks like.

Whatever mix my dogs might be would never change my feelings for them; it’s more that while I really, really am fascinated by genetics, I’m not that interested to personally define myself or my dogs. I just found out that I can order Frontline from my vet so that’s what I’ll probably do, although I KNOW what ticks look like. We found a dead one on Clancy last summer and in Gordie’s lifetime a couple of live ones. Ugh!
