OK. I am beside myself. One of my dogs has FLEAS! Everyone got groomed yesterday, I sprayed, I already give them the Frontline monthly. Thankfully the groomer only found a couple but I have been itching non-stop since I found out. I am sure I don't have them but the power of suggestion is there. My groomer said this has been one of the worst years she can remember for fleas. I don't know if she was just trying to mae me feel better or what...Has anyone else had a flea problem this year? Any helpful hints? I thought I was taking the necessary precautions...
Not a flea yet...had one tick so far but that was from being in the Poconos. I use Advantage (which also protects for more stuff) or Revolution for them and it's been great. Check your dates on the flea products...they might have expired. I purchase mine sometimes 1 year in advance. Also since you had all your dogs groomed and I take it none of your other dogs had fleas, could it be that the one they found fleas on may have just picked them up from the dog before if they shared the same crate, or even just brushed against another dog there and they do not use flea control, your dog could get them? It would take a day at least for your flea contorl to kill them. Since none of your other dogs had them, I think your dog may have picked them up there. Best of Luck....
My Ginger and Oliver both have fleas. Picked them up while we were camping I guess. Having a hard time getting rid of them. They seem to only be on the dogs. I have given them both a bath with flea shampoo and used the Frontline on them. I haven't checked for any fleas in the last few days because I wanted to see if the Frontline dose for this month got rid of them. The itching seems to have calmed down some. I will do a thorough flea check today.....
I've heard that fleas are bad this year - at least in TN. I just came back from Mich & fleas are bad there (I'm hoping we didn't carry any fleas across state lines!). We've battled fleas in the past and a flea dip seems to be the most effective. My dogs are on Frontline but they had some Mich fleas on them. They didn't seem to be getting bitten - but there were fleas on them. Ugh.
If you put white socks on your feet and walk around the house, especially in carpetted areas and areas where the dogs sleep, you will know very quickly whether there are fleas. They are attracted to white and will appear on your feet. The flea life cycle has 4 stages, and the larva can live dormant even in an empty house for a year. Vibrations (such as from vacuuming) and the carbon dioxide that mammals breathe out will both cause them to emerge. It is very, very difficult to get rid of them once they have laid eggs in a house. My poodle got them when she was 14 years old...had never had one flea prior to that, but it was a very bad season that year. It took three months, 4 professional exterminations, and $5000 to get rid of them, including replacing all the mattresses in the house and an $80 tube of cream for my bites. Fleas are nothing to mess around with.
