Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have an F1b Goldendoodle and with all poodle features including a deep and narrow chest.  A friend brought up gastropexy but she has a standard poodle.  She is planning to neuter and also get a gastropexy at the same time.  I was wondering if I should do the same while I make my appointment to neuter him. Does anyone have experience about this? What are the likelihood for bloat in Goldendoodles?  I have a slow and picky eater.  He does not inhale his food like a retriever.

If and when I ever neuter/spay a dog again, I will include this.  I lost our Springer Spaniel to bloat summer before last. It was sudden, unexpected for his breed and devastating.  I don't EVER want to go through this again.

Thank you Nancy, I appreciate your response.   I've only seen it done on Great Danes because they are most prone to it but I am going to talk to the vet about it.

And springers are not prone to it, but no one told our springer that.  :-{  I don't know how much more expensive it is, but since it totally prevents the ability to have bloat happen, it would be well worth it to me - even if I had to postpone the spay until I saved that bit more up.

To answer your question.  Doodles have broad, deep chests which does make them susceptible to bloat. Is every one going to get it? No, especially if they don't do any of the other things that contribute to it happening.  I think it is easier to make the decision for having it done when spaying - they are getting opened up anyway.
