Nope, a dog is a dog. Join the Grooming, Nutrition, Puppy Madness groups and read, read, read.....
Since the goldendoodle is a mixed breed and they all come out different, you're better off reading here on DK to get a wide variety of examples from people who have goldendoodles.
I think you will get way more information if you read through this website than you would from any book! There is so much information here - you can join "puppy madness" group for information on what to expect when you bring your puppy home and the "food group" to find out the best possible foods to feed your new puppy and then "grooming group" etc etc. Just read, read, read here and you will find out so much!!! Have fun!!!!
that is so true, I learn so much on DK, I have a books but is all general, here is real deal. just ask and everybody will come to the rescue
This site is great for info source on Doodles - all aspects are covered, but training books/videos are fun and the Puppy group has ideas. I'm a bookaholic, so read anything to do with canine behavior. I'm a videophile, so watch training vids and silly shows about dogs. Not to be too selective, I also love cats and wildlife...
I like to read Patricia McConnell, Turid Rugaas, Sophie Yin, and watch vids from Monks of New Skete (hopelessly devoted to GSD's) - Victoria Stilwell, and so on. I am not a fan of Ceasar Milan - only when I need to yell at something.
I really don't follow much of any one book - but I am a fan of The Ahimsa Training Method by Grisha Stewart.
Congratulations on your pup, my Goldendoodle is a wonderful dog with an awesome temperment and a silly streak a mile wide - - I don't know how we managed without her.
I say get the book. While this site is very helpful, you only learn what you look up. Is there a "Doodle Basics" page on this site?
If you (not your parents) haven't had a puppy in several years, its easy to miss things like how much to feed it, what to feed your doodle, how often to brush it, groom it, play with it, how much sleep it requires, leaving it unnattended with certain toys, how to introduce it to people and other dogs, socializing...
I joined this site well in advance of bringing my baby doodle home and I still ended up feeding her the wrong food (and amount). I researched plenty but was all over the place "searching" for all sorts of info on here. I ended up messing up a very basic task like what to feed her and and how much :(
Then she got matted once because I didn't brush her before showering her with flea dip. I took her camping. When she returned she was infested with a colony of fleas. She was on advantix (for tick protection)...
It was a nightmare.
