Astro is off his meds...and his stool has gone from normal to a total mess.  I have never in my life smelled something so bad.  It is olive green in color - mucousey.  Developing a food allergy or Gall bladder or Pancrease?  Any thoughts?  I have to decide what tests to run next by 7am tomorrow.

What medications is, or was, Astro on?
Metronidazole and Proviable-DC for seven days then a second time for ten days at the same time with a 14 day course of antibiotics...I want to say Amoxicillan. Every time he stops he gets uncontrollable/stopable diarrhea. During the second round of meds they also put him on EN gastro upset food. Came off all started back on normal food (Blue / Lamb) and it started again...with the added benefit of olive greenish and mucousey. I have never smelt something this bad in my life. BAD BAD BAD. Poor doodle. Otherwise he is normal as can be. The last time we ran every blood test / poop test in the book short of Addision's Disease. But now green and mucousey?
Wouldn't worry so much about the green mucous as to what's going on. Perhaps a second opinion might be a good idea. It is good that he seems fine but....Do you have a veterinary college near you that you could take him to? You can't possibly know what tests to order. He needs a good diagnostic vet to decide.
I can't be much help on what tests to run, but it sure doesn't sound like a food allergy. I hope you get some simple answers and Astro is feeling better soon!
Did they test for coccidia in the stool? One of my dogs had yellow/green mucous stools and that is what the whole litter had,
two times so far
Awe.. Poor Astro and poor YOU - AGAiN! I hope you can get some answers soon! :0(
Yvonne, I wonder if this isn't just the result of all these changes, lots of meds including long courses of antibiotics which can destroy the good flora in the digestive tract, plus Rx food which is basically hydrolyzed by-products. Maybe his system just needs some time to regulate itself. If eveything else seems all right with him except for the diarrhea, maybe you could just put him on plain cooked chicken and rice for a few days, plus some canned pumpkin, and then gradually start adding his kibble until he's back on track?
Sounds like it's worth a try. Maybe a little yogurt with the chicken and rice?
Thank you for remembering the yogurt!
Do you use a certain brand of yogurt for dogs? Do you only give if they are having some sort of digestion issue or once in a while - just because? Thanks in advance! (Sometimes I feel like Diane Keaton in the movie (can't remember the name - "Baby?) where she 'inherits' he cousin's baby and all of a sudden starts making her own baby food - lol)
Plain, unflavored yogurt- not vanilla, not Activia. Any brand. People usually give it to replace the good flora in the gut that's destroyed by antibiotics, or for other digestive issues, but it doesn't hurt healthy dogs, either.
