Hi all of my doodle friends! I am trying to helf a friend... Here is the abbreviated version of the issue.... My friend and her husband bought their son a puggle puppy for his b-day last week from a breeder. It turns out their son is allergic to him - he was around one previously and didn't have an issue but as time as gone on it as got worse and worse. After they had it for 3 days they called the breeder who refused to take it back stating it was a "danger to her other dogs" - nice breeder! Awful. Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions? I can get specifics and photos. HELP!!!!!
There are breed rescues and general private rescue groups in most areas. In this case, you would have to look for a pug or beagle rescue in her area. Petfinder has a section that lists all rescues and shelters by area, at the top of the main page. Otherwise, you can do a search for "pug rescue" or "beagle rescue" on Google. I doubt that there are any "puggle" rescues yet, but there may be. If people can give up doodles by the dozen they may be doing the same thing with pugs.
The worst possible thing for your friend to do is to list the dog for sale on Craig's list, Lycos, Kijiji, or anything similar. That is very dangerous for the dog.
There are no legitimate breeders breeding puggles. Your friend's dog most likely came from a BYB or puppy mill; there are many that sell directly on-line or through brokers.
Very interesting, I didn't know about the puggle breeders, I don't know where they got it yet. We live in Ohio (large Amish population) and I fear that is where it came from. I will check out the rescues for them and hopefully something will come through. I will definatley tell her about craigslish and the others. Thank you!!!!!!
There are extremely FEW breeders of mixes that are reputable...I'd say close to NONE outside of the more common labradoodles/goldendoodles and aussiedoodles since we have a large community of folks keeping things on the up and up. That's not the case for shiranians, puggles, and poo-mix-of-the-day. LD's and GD's have been around for a long time, but I'm willing to put money that most other mixes are all BYB's. Perhaps another exception might be cockapoos, but there are nowhere near the number of breeders who test, give solid health guarantees, etc among them as there are among LD's and GD's.
Karen is an excellent representative and resource for rescues so I won't add anything with regards to finding a home or rescue, although I want you to encourage your friend NOT to get an "allergy free" doodle. If this boy has allergies to pugs, it is likely he will have allergies to doodles. So if they mention this as an alternative there is a lot of information on DK and DRCC you can provide so she is well informed in case there is a next time.
Sorry for your friend. That must be a heartbreak for this family.
They don't have any interest in getting any other kind of puppy after this experince. They are really upset about having to give it up and I know they wouldn't want to take any chances again. Their neighbor has a puggle and he has been fine around it on many occasions so they didn't think they would have a problem. I feel really bad for them.
I'm back. I have an idea. Denise, doodles ( at least my doodle) love pugs. Spud can't stay away from the face of those little snort snorts.
You need another puppy. Hunter needs another puppy. :) Snort Snort.
Denise,
Adina posted rescues in our area, ( thank you Adina ) The first one on the list is PAWS and PRAYERS. I am familiar with Paws and Prayers and I highly recommend her.
I think they even have a puggle currently, but it's not good with cats, kids and has some other issue...so your friend's puggle will stand a better chance of adoption!
HI Denise,
Just wondered how the Puggle thing was working out. Hope your friend found someone. Someone expressed an interest to me in knowing more about the dog today.
Again, my thoughts go out to the poor family and the heartache of giving up a new and much wanted pet.
