Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone - I used this forum the last time I had a medical issue with my 2 1/2 years old tiny golden doodle, and the advice was very helpful, that I thought I would ask for your help again.

My goldendoodle, Pixie - vomitted about 6 times the other night, it started with her food contents and then turned into a brown liquid - nothing changed in her diet, nor did she have any treats that she hadn't had before - but who knows if she ate something she shouldn't of had when outside.

We took her to the vet, they did an x-ray and it came back normal - and was diagnosed with possible gastroenteritis - she has been on a bland diet (although she prefer the beef to the rice, and eats around the rice).  She had stopped vomiting for about a day, and then yesterday she threw up some yellow liquid (I assume bile) and then threw up twice more.

We went back to the vet, they did another x-ray (looked normal) and they are doing a blood test.  She is now on metronidazole, had a cernia injection and have 4 cernia tablets for the next few days.  She still sticks her nose up at the rice and would rather just eat beef - she is acting quite normal and still playful.

I would rather not have her on a bunch of meds - and again we need to find out the results of the wellness profile blood test, and fingers crossed it comes back normal.

Any of this sound familiar to you? Any advice and suggestions that you can provide?

Thank you kindly.

Just did - she started to like it, but when she got to the chunkier bits she didn't want to chew and would spit them out and then gave up.  Sigh....will try later on again.

Photinie, if you don;t see a huge improvement by Monday, I would ask your vet for a referral to a veterinary internal medicine specialist.

Pixie may need you to get out the blender and purée the chunky food...or use flake baby rice instead of whole rice to mix with chicken.

Please everyone, don't shoot me, but I saw something about "grass seed heads that migrate in tissue". Google and see if there is any similarity to Pixie's symptoms, and inquire at the vets.

Keep your spirits up

You may be thinking of foxtails. But at any rate, this is not related.

I am glad that you have ruled out some things and have new treatments to try.  Poor Pixie. I hope she improves each day.

A quick update on Pixie - firstly thank you all so kindly for your best wishes.  She has been doing better along the course of the last week - I have weaned her off of the Gabapentin (pain killer), still on a few more weeks of metronidazole, down to 2 doses of sulcrate until the end of the week, and continuing the pepcid AC - she is also on reactin, as we have hit ragweed allergy season here and she's been itchy and scratchy.

She is hungry, eating her kibble very well and always looking for more - I have kept her pretty quiet, but her energy levels have been good, although the gabapentin had been making her a little drowsy I believe.

The one thing I noticed, is that she is having many bowel movements - she has had three today, and she goes to the bathroom, takes a few more steps across the grass and goes again...three separate times today! They have been formed and fine looking, except for the last one when we walked to the park and she was sniffing around where other dogs had gone and she did her last one that was a little softer than the rest - its almost like she completely empties herself out - would that be the meds that she is on? Any advice - she is also on the proviable probiotic.

Thanks again for all your concerns, you have been a strong emotional support!!!

That poo description is identical to Dinah's. The longer they are in the intestine, the drier they get. Her 3rd one is always softer but still firm enough to pick up skillfilly. Her taste of the wild has probiotics in it...just sayin',

The sucralfate slows down the digestive process, so that might be why.

Thanks! So that I understand correctly, sulcralfate may make her go often - I just cannot believe how much poop is coming out of her, for such a small dog!! Good thing

I have multiple bags for our walks!

Oddly enough the side effects is constipation...go figure ;)

sHE'S pOOPED!   >>grin>>  It does sound like she's feeling better, so I'm happy for you.

Sigh...I guess I spoke too soon, Pixie drank a lot of water this morning and burped it up, which is not something uncommon for her.  She had her breakfast, acted normal - but when I came home from being out - I found a mushy liquid substance on the little bench that she sits on, I sniffed at it and it wasn't diarrhea - almost like a mouthful of water and chewed up mushed food...I checked all over the house and didn't find anything more.

Always keeps it interesting...not certain what this latest surprise is all about.
