This was on the news in Southern California this week.  The good news this week is that the man who put up the cones to protect the black lab adopted her today.  They named her Grace. I couldn't download the video (didn't know how). Maybe someone can get it off You Tube. Happy ending, but sad beginning.

Dog braves traffic to stick by fatally struck pal

Animal care officials removed the injured animal and took the black lab to Baldwin Park Animal Care Center and it was made available for adoption soon. (AP) LA PUENTE, Calif. - Los Angeles county animal control officials are heralding the loyalty of a black Labrador retriever that braved traffic to stay by another dog that was fatally struck by a car.

A motorist who saw the dogs on a La Puente street Wednesday morning put down traffic cones to alert other drivers and shot video of the dogs. The video released Saturday showed the female Labrador lying next to a motionless, yellow Labrador as vehicles pass dangerously close to them.

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control says the 2-year-old dog, who animal shelter staff and volunteers have named Grace, appears to have been well cared for.

However, nobody has come forward to claim her so she is up for adoption.

I read about this and figured someone would find a picture. Thanks. It always amazes me how loyal and brave dogs can be.

Here's the video I hope.

This just breaks my heart.

This is the loyalty of a dog, to stand by a friend, even at peril to himself, even when the friend will never know or acknowledge that love and that loyalty.

And we humans cast them aside every day because we don't have time for them? Shame on us. Clearly we are not as evolved as we like to think we are.

Indeed, Karen. In fact I sometimes despair at how far we have yet to go.

This picture broke my heart! What a loyal dog and I am happy to hear someone adopted her.

I can't look at this without tears.   Thirty five years ago my (then husband) and I had 2 wonderful dogs. We lived in a very rural area and allowed the dogs off leash whenever we were out in the yard.  One day both dogs took off into the woods ignoring our calls completely.    We spent the rest of the afternoon until dark looking for them on foot and in the car.   At 1 that morning we got a call for the local dog officer.  Both dogs had been found dead on the highway which was located almost 2 miles from our home.  I've always believed that one was hit and the other went to "help" and was hit and killed.   It was one of the saddest days of my life and I still tear up when I think of Daisy and Sounder.

What a loyal friend.   : (

This story brought a tear to my eye too and so does yours. It just takes an instant and they can be gone. Scary.

I loved those dogs....they were my "babies" before I began having babies.  But I have to say...and I don't know why it is....Banjo IS my baby...he is SO much a part of our lives...maybe it's the point we're at in our lives....I don't know...but .I can't even let myself think about something like that happening to him.

So sorry to hear that Carol, I can't even imagine!

Hugs, Carol.

Thank you Karen.

I'm so sorry Carol. Just terrible to lose your babies so tragically. Doodle kisses from Tara.

Thank you Ricki.  Doodle kisses to Tara.
