I have a question regarding hips.  We are interested in a litter of pups that the mom has fair hips and the dad good hips.  A friend of mine saw the pairings of mom and dad and said that we could expect to have problems with our adult dog with a mom having hips of only fair.  Since this is the first larger size dog I have owned outside of boxer's as a child, I don't know if there is any truth ot this or not?

I wouldn't say you can "expect" to have problems. The chances are obviously greater than if both parents had "good" or "excellent" ratings, but there are a lot of factors involved in HD, not just the parents' hip scores.

Plus, many doodle breeders use preliminary scores anyway, which are not as reliable. Do you know if those are prelims? Are the parents past two years old, and were the hip score done after the 2nd birthday?

Doesn't indicate that the tests are prelims.  Not sure of the age of the parents, and is the key after the 2nd birthday?  I'll inquire.  Thank you!

I would want to know the ages of the parents anyway, and meet them as well. :)

OFA hip testing grades before the age of two are preliminary scores, and while they are fairly reliable in general, they can change. Here's the info from the OFA website on how prelimiary scores compared to the scores after the dogs were retested at two years of age: http://www.offa.org/hd_prelims.html

I'm assuming these scores are OFA, because PennHip uses numerical ratings.

Thank you, I've got some more questions to ask!

Just in case you haven't already read the DK tips on What to Look for in a Breeder, here's the link: http://www.doodlekisses.com/notes/What_To_Look_for_In_a_Breeder

As long as you're asking questions, (and you should), this article may give you some ideas of other questions to ask.

While I agree that 'expecting' hip trouble may be harsh, I would question breeding an animal with Fair Hips and keep looking. Good or better.

Thank you Sally for your response, I'm going to call my vet and talk with him and see what his take is on it.
