Anyone's dog ever have a hoarse voice?
If I did not know it was my dog, I would not recognize Spud's bark today. It is completely different
He is playing and acting normal but that voice is crazy weird
UPDATE:
It appears to be an upper respiratory infection of some kind and yes, maybe kennel cough or dog flu.
He is happy today, but gets completely out of breath with any activity and starts breathing and rattling hard. He is not coughing. Sounds more like the nose and throat area.
If things do not improve, he will be sedated to get a further view of the respiratory tract.
Get Well Soon, Spud
Thank you for your thoughts
UPDATE 2
We saw Spud's regular vet this afternoon.
His chest is clear. It is not kennel cough. He is not coughing. The focus is now on the heart and/or the swollen airway. Those where the vet's chief concerns but the reasons are unknown. By the time we got there he was quiet and calm but I did show the vet the videos of these episodes we are experiencing and he clearly agreed, " that isnt right" he said.
No more activity. Just keep him really quiet ( ya, right)
We will continue the antibiotic and he was given prednisone to get the swelling out of his airway. If it continues, he will get some xrays. I wish, I would have insisted the xrays would have been done today. It's his airway!
I didnt notice, but he has lost some weight since August on his weight today.
He is happy, eating, and wants to play. He just cant play without loosing his breath
Thanks for your thoughts!
Update 3
WOOF! WOOF! woof woof woof woof woof and a few great growls too!
Someone knocked on the front door. It took me a while to shut him down again. LOL
He has turned the corner and it's deep. Normal. A little husky. Like Sexy -husky
Final Update-with 5 days to go on steroids I think we have crossed over to normal. We played today

Hope Spud's bark is back to normal by now!
I agree that it doesn't sound like the start of kennel cough- Winnie's bark sounded more like a seal when she had it.
If there was something stuck in his throat, I would think he'd be actually coughing and acting like he was in distress.
Glad the vet can see him tomorrow- my guess is that they'll rule out thyroid problems or something else that might be pushing on the larynx. Best wishes!
I hope he's back to his normal self by morning!
Hmm… I'm at a loss. Finn has a deep lab by bark if a stranger comes to the house but sometimes when he gets excited playing with Song he'll have a more high pitched bark like this. But since you've never heard it before, sounds like a vet visit. Keep us posted. Hope all's well.
Update
We both took a long nap together. He did not get up and I thought his nose was warm... Dont know though.
He barked out the window and it was really low. Barry White, low. Odd. Then it went tiny again. It is still tiny, high-pitch. WTD?
None of these are his voices
"Barry White low" is more consistent with kennel cough, I think.
Could he have injured his larynx somehow?
I think that larynx has always been sensitive. I know larynx issues are more common in small dogs but he has had it since the beginning. We never use a flat collar on him
Just never had voice changes before. They are extreme
I am glad to hear you can get Spud in to see the Doc tomorrow. That bark seems so strange coming out of that big boy. It sounds like inflammation in the vocal cords for some reason. Strange. Will be looking for an update tomorrow. Try no to worry.
Aside from kennel cough why couldn't a dog have laryngitis? Good luck tomorrow.
True!
So True!
I am waiting to see if he eats tonight. He ate a cookie and swallowed. Waiting to see if he eats dinner. That will make me feel better
