Navigating through the early morning traffic of Dallas, I began wondering what I had gotten us into. Could we handle the additional mouth to feed? The extra time and effort to take care of another young one? Will her handicap be too much for us? Those and many other questions ran through my head as I turned into the parking lot of Dr. Beam’s office.

It had been almost three weeks since I had given Honey over to Dr. Beam and his staff to work their “magic” on her rear knees. The two day trek from the Cincinnati, Ohio, area to Dr. Beam’s office in Alvarado, Texas, brought us both, inexplicably, close to one another. My assignment was only to transport Honey from her foster home in Ohio to Texas for an operation that would give her a chance for a normal life, but in the thirty hours it took us to make the trip, we fell in love. When I left her that day she was sitting in her kennel looking at me with the most forlorn stare. I immediately turned back to her, knelt and held her saying, “Honey, I promise I will come back for you”. Today was the day I honored that promise.

All of the questions that had been running through my mind two years ago today have long been forgotten. She not only fit into our clan right away, she also brought a sense of completeness to our lives. Today, with everything she had gone through years ago, she is now leading that normal life we all promised her. Also, she has become a strong, loving and “motherly” lady filled with devotion to her family. What did I get us into? LOVE that is what.

Happy second “Gotcha Day”, Honey (DRC Alumni 2013).
