How do I train my Doodle to use my treadmill?

Now that it is starting to get dark at 4:30, I don't like taking Fozzy for walks in our neighborhood. We have no sidewalks and the street lights are few and far in between. I thought I could put him on the treadmill in the evenings util the days start to get longer. Does anyone have any experience with training their dog on a treadmill?
