Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We have a 12 week old Goldendoodle.  He loves being outside and his three walks are his favorite time of the day (after mealtime).  I live in Chicago and the cold, snow, ice hasn't bothered him at all.  We've recently been out for 15-20 minutes at a time and when we get back home I have to work to get him inside.  Is there any time limit on how long he should be outside for and how far he can walk at this age or if he seems fine and I have the time should I just let him keep walking?

I'll also do short periods of jogging as he loves running also and I figure anything to get more energy out is a plus.

Thanks!

General rule of thumb is 1-2 min per weeks of age a couple of times a day.  Short jogs should be ok, but I wouldn't push that too much.  There is some worry about the growth plates esp for larger breeds.  Just increase the time gradually.  You know what they say " a tired dog is a good dog"!!!  :^)  Playing and training also help with excess energy.

Jogging I've heard not until at least 2 years old.  Free running to play fetch etc. is fine of course but running with us on pavement we are waiting until Riley is at least 2.

To exercise Riley we go for walks, play fetch/tug inside the house (no fenced off leash areas near us, we don't have a fenced yard yet, new house).  We also go to a nearby off leash woodland dog trail/park with other dogs but we didn't take her there until after her 16 week shots.

Mental stimulation is also great for wearing them out, at 12 weeks we were reserving a portion of her daily kibble for lots of repetitive positive reinforcement training.

I've always heard, with most breeds its "low impact" exercise for the first year until the growth plates close. We used K-9 joggers (bicycle gadgets) to keep our whippets conditioned for show and over a year old was recommended. This is our first doodle and the doodle book that I bought said the same thing.... low impact. Walks are great. I dont limit those. Our Beau loves to play ball too.

Thanks for all the replies.  When I said jogging I more meant about 20-30 seconds of running followed by walking for a few minutes. Just enough to get him running around a little.  I don't take him on true jogs.

Are Goldendoodles a breed that like to jog when they get older?  I'd love if when he is 2 or 3 years old if I could take him on a slow 1-2 mile run.

Depends on the energy level of your dog more than breed I think.

Our mini goldendoodle Luna DH tried jogging with her a few times over the years... she just wasn't into it.  She was quite a mellow low to medium energy dog.

Riley is more high energy (and much larger) so we are definitely thinking she will like jogging as an adult.  DH just took her for an hour long walk and she still has plenty left in the tank :p
