Has anyone successfully gotten their dog to stop humping? Not sure if it's a domanince thing, excitement thing, or hormonal thing, however it's getting out of hand haha. Every time we see another dog he humps it, girl or boy. The behavior started a couple months ago. It doesn't matter the size of the dog either, big or small, he doesn't mind! We try to stop the behavior when we see it, but at places such as a dog park it's almost impossible to keep up with him. Earlier this week he targeted a 100 pound black lab (yeti is 30 pounds). They "played" for a good hour together. And by played I mean yeti humped him literally the whole time. The black labs mom suggested just letting it go to see if the dogs would handle it themselves. Blue would snip at him a bit but it never deterred yeti. Once blue got on him and yeti just let it happen. A couple of times blue had Yeti pinned on the ground and yeti just got up and went back for more.
Yeti is just over a year old and isn't neutered. We are planning on it, however our groomer would like to use him as a stud once before we do it. Obviously I know we could stop taking him to the dog park however it is really nice to let him run some energy off. It does happen else where too. Yesterday he was targeting a 7 pound poddle mix at a friends house. He got groomed yesterday as well and could not stay off one of her goldendoodles. We would like to be able to take him places where other dogs may be so I was wondering if there is anything we can do to get it under control (besides neutering him at the moment). I heard using a shock collar could help stop it if it is a dominance thing. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Well, it's probably partly from hormones, but mostly from dominance.

Haley, please rethink allowing Yeti to be bred. First, as mentioned in the DK breeder guidelines, no dog of any kind should ever be bred before the age of two years old. Second, again as mentioned in the guidelines, no dog should ever be bred without having the appropriate genetic testing done.  Most reputable breeders also have a clause in their purchase agreements that prohibit you from breeding the dog unless he was purchased on a breeding contract. Please reconsider that idea, and have Yeti neutered soon.

Karen thank you so much for the info. I didn't realize there was an age for breeding nor did I know about the testing. It was brought up once or twice by our groomer but will definitely reconsider:

Thank you, Haley.

Those mini Air Horn or compressed air things are pretty good.

My friend bought me Pet Corrector on Amazon.  Small and compact, give it a try.

FWIW, Teddy (unneutered) will hump usually 1 dog during Dog Park times.  Fretfully, sometimes it's a Pitbull or another much-larger dog.  He can't hump a Yorkie or Maltese or something where all I have to worry about is just being embarrassed; no, I have to worry about him being attacked by a much larger or ferocious dog !! lol

Fortunately, all of the dogs at the parks we go to are very tolerant.  Some growl or make a sudden move to deter him (of course, Teddy is obstinate and doesn't listen), but the only dog to nip Teddy so far is my sister's 8-year old Schnoodle and that was back when Teddy was 3-4 months old !

He's not doing it to all the dogs or a bunch of them, it's usually just 1 dog, 2 tops.  Not sure why.

If he isn't neutered, he shouldn't be at the dog park - at least rules for the ones where I go bar unneutered adult males - not that anyone is there to enforce it.  Our Charlie tries to hump at the dog park, but quits once corrected by us (sometimes takes several times or being leashed for a while), or being corrected by the dog.

Thank you for being open to Karen's advice.  Mine is the same.  If you are going to stud him out, he really needs to be health tested and old enough for the testing to be accurate.

Thanks so much! We leash him when he is being really naught! And surprisingly no regulations about being neutered or spayed at either of the parks we go to.
Sometimes I take him to the areas fenced off for smaller dogs "dogs under 30 pounds." He is right around 30 so I figure it's okay. A lot of times no one else is using these areas so he is free to run around as he pleases.
