This is not for the weak of heart....or stomach.

Allie had some puss filled pockets on her tummy. I took her to the vet today and they said she either had a bacterial infection or an allergy. The vet said it could have been caused by several things. It could have been something she lay on at the groomer or it could have been even a change in shampoo at the groomer. She put her on an antibiotic pill for a week and some spray to spray on her tummy. The problem is I have no idea what caused it and how to avoid it in the future. Any ideas.....? Clueless in Memphis.

I don't understand how pus filled pockets could be allergic. The vesicles from an allergy should be filled with clear fluid not pus. This sound much more like an infection. As to avoiding it, that's hard to say. No way to really prevent all infections but be careful to avoid having her nicked while groomed etc. Any small interruption in skin integrity can lead to an infection since bacteria are all around and on the skin surface.
I also wonder if they disinfect the grooming table after each dog has been there?  You might ask that question and also if they clean the blades, scissors and combs/brushes in the disinfecting solution after use on each dog?  I'm sure they will say yes but I sort of doubt that they do it every time...that would just be my suspicious mind working though.  You might want to just plant the idea in their minds by letting them know your baby got an infection soon after coming home from their grooming salon...hint, hint.  You also might ask them to always use a guard over the blade when doing her tummy and sanitary.  There is absolutely no need to skin them bald and that only leads to irritation and possible razor burn which you also don't want to experience.  With the shortest blade guard they can get a nice clean shave but not down to the skin.

Porter had a few of those the first couple times he went to the groomer.  I never brought him to the vet because there was no surrounding redness or irritation.  I may one-up you on the grossness here...but, he seemed to cure them on his own by licking them and eventually they burst.

How's that breakfast? :-)

Actually it's a pretty good method sometimes. Saliva has some healing effect at least in humans and I think in dogs too.
Thanks everyone for responding. As you can see by her picture, I don't have Allie cut every often. I keep up with her brushing so I am able to let her fur grow out. I do take her to PetSmart for a bath every once in a while no cutting just bath. This seems to have happened after a bath at PetSmart. I think I am going to have to find somewhere else. Sad because I once thought they did such a good job. Not any more. I hate to have my baby with any problems:(
What kind of puss filled pockets?  How big?
