I a right there with you Leslie, not sure I could or would ignore everything. We have the bonus with our girls that they know when I say go sit or go lay they respond, it is greeting people that come to the door that becomes an issue, so that is when I am implementing the ignore rule. Meg will nudge with her nose to get attention and knows to stop when told no.
My main problem here is consistency, my husband is very old school about dogs and getting him to do the same thing I do is a struggle, he is learning a bit but honestly training a dog has never been his thing.
Short update, I had to leave twice this morning, both times when I came home the girls stayed laying in place and came up after I was sitting down to see if it was time, it was not so a few minutes later I loved the heck out of them. We were just gone for a few more hours running some errands and grocery shopping and came home, as the girls came to see who was coming in I signaled them to sit, blocked the storm door open and left that gate open to the car, carried all the groceries in before closing anything and releasing them, ignored them while I put the groceries up. They were absolutely on point with the rules. Leaving here now and going to get my doodle fix!!
I have been using the Doggy Dan feeding and ignore method for a day and already I see a HUGE difference in how my Abby relates to me. Ignore doesn't mean don't shower them with love land kisses and pats and play. It just means that I call the shots as to when this happens. And I had been having trouble with Abby's recall for a few months---who me, come when YOU call me? After only one day she's coming lickety-split, even if she's chewing on her favorite bone. And it only makes me want to love her up even more. But she has to come to me WHEN I call her for this to happen. And she seems so much more relaxed knowing that I'm the pack leader! Our doodles are so darn smart that it doesn't take them long to get the picture. So happy for Doggy Dan's advice. I see even happier days ahead once I begin the walk conditioning!!!!!!
