Intermittent Incontinence
Hi everyone,
My just turned 2 year old very healthy, active Labradoodle 'Jolie' had an episode of incontinence 5 weeks ago. I stepped out of the bathroom and there she was asleep at the foot of the bed in a very large pool of her own urine. There were also two other small patchs on the carpet that i then noticed where i had seen her sleeping within a half hour period before. There was a lot of urine, it was virtually odourless and perfectly clear.
She had never wet herself or made a toileting mistake inside ever before, not even as a puppy, so we took her to the vet straight away. Urine analysis, xrays, ultrasounds, observation for hours all came back clear, no issues. We hoped it was some kind of freak 'one off'. Tonight - almost 6 weeks later- at about the same time as last time and after a very energetic walk & play with frisbee where she got pretty hot & had lots of drinks a few hours earlier (same as last time) she did it again. Can anyone shed some light? tips, ideas? has anyone had this experience with their Labradoodle? She didn't even realise she had wet herself either time. Very worried 'mummy' Deb :0(

Oh one other thing... on the walk back home after her play today she stopped a lot of times to do a wee. I wasn't sure if she was actually managing to go. She seemed to stop a lot more often than usual and for a very short try. This happened the first time also i remember. Plus, after she wet herself tonight & I had woken her up she wanted to go straight outside to relieve herself. She went twice more in a relatively short space of time after that before bed.

Have you noticed if she is drinking any more than normal aside from when she was playing really hard?

Hi Lucy & Sohies Mom, No she isn't drinking more than normal. In fact as it has been raining a lot i noticed she hasn't been drinking as much as usual - or else she is sourcing her water from the plants in the garden (we have bromeliads that hold water) as is her preference rather than drinking from her drinking bowls :0) The vet tested for Diabetes & Cancer and all tests came back clear thankfully.

Yes she was Andrea. She was desexed before we picked her up from the breeder. The breeder I bought her from is also the secretary of the Australian Labradoodle association & she informed me that there is a school of thought that suggests early spaying can increase the incidence of incontinence in bitches. The vet mentioned that to us also on our first visit but he was sitting on the fence about it. The breeder checked and has had no other dogs to date with any kind of incontinence at this young age. She is following Jolie's situation closely along with us which is nice. A very professional lady who loves loves loves her doodles.

Our male lab did this. The vet put him on Proin for the rest of his life & the problem was solved. The Rx tightens the sphincter involved. Good luck for success in solving this :)

Thank you Diane. If it's ok to ask how often did he have the incontinence? Every now and then or regularly? Is Proin an Estrogen/ hormone replacement? Are there any negative side effects or things to look out for? Thanks Debi

It happened twice in one day...it came out of nowhere. He was laying on the deck & both times a big puddle formed under him. We took him right to the vet (because I thought he had a bladder infection but he didn't) & she put him on Proin.
My best guess is that he was on it for 8 or 9 years, he lived to 13.5, & he had no side effects & no further episodes.
He did, throughout his life, have times when he would obsess about peeing...in & out & in & out & in & out of the house every few minutes...he'd stand there for a long time & sometimes pee & sometimes not. We never figured that out...I'd catch urine in a tupperware, have him tested for UTI, but he didn't have one.

Will do Diane and thank you for the information. Yep 'came out of nowhere' best describes it for us too. Both times previous to wetting herself whilst sleeping, Jolie stopped and tried to pee many times on a walk home from a big play just a couple of hours earlier. Much more than normal. Curious. I'll have to keep an eye out for that- possible warning sign? Thanks again, Debi (Australia)

It could be something that would not be detected in a urinalysis. Did your vet do a full blood panel?

My thoughts exactly ... that is why I was curious above to know if she was drinking more than normal?

Yes, I think the fact that the urine is clear is significant.
