I know that there are certain dogs that are just born to run. What I mean by running is like running away from you or running away from home. Lets say, if you were to let go of your doodles leash by accident or on purpose, would he or she run away from you and not look back? What I am trying to ask is would your doodle run away from you or would he or she stay by you on an off leash walk? I personally know that Huff stays by us outside. When we take him to the beach, he plays and runs but he always comes back to check that we are all still there. If I take him outside off leash, he walks pretty close to me, not quite at my side but he doesn't go in the street unless there is something interesting there like a bunny, road runner, or even a cat haha:) If he sees another person or dog he will go right up to them too but he doesn't have any intentions of running away. Does your doodle run away from you?
Quincy is not a runner, he gets tons of off leash walks and is never more than a few feet ahead, never goes out of sight and will stop every few feet and look back to see if we are still there. Every now and then when we can, we step off the trail out of his sight and he comes running back with a look of near panic on his face till he spots us. When we are walking him on leash and my DH is holding the leash Quincy will keep checking every few feet to make sure I am still there, if for some reason I stop he will stop also and won't go any further until I start moving again. ( I am usually stopped to take pictures). The one and only time he ever went outside without us knowing, he had followed one of my son's friend out the door which was left wide open. When I missed him and went to look for him in a near panic, as soon as I stepped out the door there he was happily playing with a soccer ball on the neighbours lawn. He was probably outside for 10 mins or more and could have gone anywhere, but thankfully he chose not to. He is not one to run out the door and probably would not have gone outside if he hadn't followed someone out, so no he is not a runner.
That is cool:) One time Huff got out behind our shop and ran up into the hills behind the shop and when we noticed, we went out there frantically and called his name, he just looked at us from the hill and ran back down!:) I was so worried though haha:)
Luna would run away from us *if* there was someone to run TO. She is 100% people (and dog) oriented, and would bolt across the street to visit someone.
