My poor Bentely, he is so itchy. He has a flea allergy, and had a reaction to the advantix. He is still itchy and red. His belly is red too. I used an all natural product this time, something with cinnimon and spices in it. it was a topical. I dont think its working. He is itchy still and still scratches alot. What do I do? He has bleeding hot spots, and missing fur now in his patches. he is a mess and needs help!
One of our beagles has allergies and experiences bad side effects from Temaril-P. We have just recently began the swap over to Zyrtec. Sherlock weights 36 pound and we are doing 5 mg a day. There is conflicting information on the web concerning Zyrtec and dogs (just like there is for Temaril-P). Check with your vet to see what he/she might suggest.
Try an oatmeal based shampoo for quick relief for red, itchy skin. As a natural preventative check out Cedarcide http://www.pestproducts.com/cedarcide.htm a cedar based pest repellent.
Bleeding hot spots and fur loss require a trip to the vet, IMO. There could very well be an infection, and that requires antibiotics.
Zyrtec & other antihistamines will help suppress a histamine reaction, but that won't get rid of a bacterial infection, and neither will any "natural" remedy. I hope your vet can reliably diagnose Bentley's problem and help him get some relief.

One of my dogs had the hot spot. He was very itchy and chewed on it to make it worse. We had to take him to his vet to get some antihistamine to calm the itchyness, I also used the topical lotion for the same purpose. It took awhile for it to go away.......
I think you need to go to the vet and get some advice. Bentley probably needs a shot to calm down the hot spots and an antibiotic or medication for the spots. Then you can begin work on keeping the itches away.
I agree with you Nancy, by all means this dog needs to go to the vet and be checked out. I had a terrible time with Oliver with an infection that started with a hot spot. The minute I see him really licking an area I check it out, and I immediately put this powder on called Neo-Predef. I got it from the vet and I think it is the best thing in the world for hot spots. I also give benedryl, We have taken him to the vet if I don't carch t early enough, then he needs a shot and other meds and the powder Neo-Predef. I watch like a hawk, since we had that bad experience when Oliver had that licking thing for about 2 mos. the only problem with the shot is that it makes them have to urinate more frequently, thus making them drink more, but if it is as bad as she says, I would have him at the vet in the morning... He probably needs an antibiotic too at this point..
