I am so shook up I can barely type. We were out on our a.m. walk when suddenly this dog got out of his yard and attacked JD. I had to drop his leash, he was trapped. JD put up a fight but he's handicapped by his ruptured disc, and he fell. The other dog was over him down on the ground, I was screaming and trying to kick the other dog, I don't even know exactly what happened, my brain just shut down and it's a blur, it all happened so fast, but the dog was off of him by the time the owners came out. I was mostly worried about JD's back and didn't even know he was bitten until we got home. He has a puncture wound with a tear under his eye (thank God he missed the eye itself) and a big scrape across the top of his head. We're just back from the ER. They cleaned it and gave me pain meds and antibiotics...just what he needs with his IBD. I may not give him the pain meds, but I have to give him the amoxicillin, which is certain to upset his stomach. And I have to apply warm compresses to the wound under his eye several times a day for a few days so it doesn't scab up too fast. I am so upset I'm shaking. That dog got out of that yard so fast and so easily, they may as well not even have had a fence.
Going to pick up his amoxicillin now. Poor JD.

You know I live my prong collars. I just feel really secure with them and the doodles don't pull or lunge.
I just need to find someone who can show me how to use one. I have no idea how to even put one on, lol.
You might try the quick release one. It's a lot easier to put on and off. The downside is, I have heard stories about them coming off accidentally - so some people use a second collar for safety.
I got mine through a website where she makes them with a easy to put on and off release. The prongs were too hard to do for my old hands. Also, they are Herm Sprenger , made better in terms of smotother prongs, and I got stainless steel since my doodles fur is stained by other metals. I think JD's would be too. http://www.leashesbydesign.com/ProngCollars/ProngCollars.html You can see them here.
Shannon is helpful. She used to make gorgeous braided leashes but she still does the prongs. There is also info on how to place them on Line. But basically the collar should sit high on the neck, up near the ears. Not sure mine do but they work.
Wow, what a brilliant idea.
Hope he is ok. We were attacked last summer. It scares the ###### out of you ,and I know it really scares our doodles. Good luck ,hope recovery is quick...
Thanks, Lynette.
What kind of a dog was it Karen? Sorry, if you already said I missed it...
He's a true mutt. I would guess Shepherd mix, and maybe some kind of hound. Black, brown and a little white. About the same height as JD, but much more muscular build.
That's good news Karen! It's an unfortunate incident but nice when someone steps up and takes responsibility and offers support. How's JD doing?
He's nervous and restless, kind of clingy, which is all to be expected I think. I'm kind of tempted to give him a pain pill just to get him to rest. Maybe he is in pain, with him it's hard to tell. They gave me tramadol, I have no experience with that drug. She did say it won't upset his stomach.
Pain meds usually don't upset stomachs and I would definitely give him one. I think you will be able to tell in 1/2 hour if it helps. They can be constipating though.
