Next month I'm going to be dog sitting a friends dog in my house. Kali has met this dog both at the park and at our house. Kali is a 13 month old female GD and Gypsy (the dog we'll be taking care of) is a 7 year old female shitzu mix. The two dogs seem to neither like nor dislike each other and spent most of their time ignoring each other. I'm a little worried that once Kali realizes that Gypsy is here to stay she will be upset. Any ideas or suggestions on how to make things go smoothly? Gypsy will be with us for 2 1/2 weeks.
I never have dog sat, but I have both a Doodle and a Shih-tzu/mix exactly the same ages too...........lol!! They get along fine. It was an adjustment at first since our Shih-tzu had been with us for so many years by herself, but they worked it out. Make sure your doodle and the other dog hve away of getting away from eachother when needed & feed in seperate areas.
I dog sit a lot and everything goes good. The problem may be after the Shih-tzu leaves because your Kali will probably love having a friend. I've been dog sitting for about a month and Rudy went home yesterday. Fergie is just moping around looking for him. I am getting a second doodle for Fergie in a month but it's going to be a long month wait. She's very sad. My husband thinks I'm nuts but I really think she does miss Rudy a lot. You may have to get that second doodle then. LOL.
I just did this for my friends' two goldendoodles, in their home. Mine loves both of their dogs, and they play at the park together all the time. I did have a hard time getting mine to eat the entire time I was there. I had a great time, the other two GD's had a great time, but I think my poor little guy was thinking he would have to share his Mommy forever.
Since they are pretty tolerant of each other, sounds like things should go well. I'd set things up so EITHER dog has a place to get away if they are tired of the other...or crate one dog every now and then so the other has some freedom...IF You see they need a break. Feed separately just in case too.
Good luck, take lots of photos and let us know how it goes!
