I got a horse today. Which ordinarily would be fine, but considering the fact that there are two equine rescues in first & second place in NJ...
What is the deal with that, anyway? Is NJ such a big horse state? I could see Kentucky, or Montana, or something, but New Jersey? From what I can tell, the whole state is barely the size of Chicago. How can there be room for so many horses? Does it have to do with cutting down on vehicle emissions? Are they replacing parking meters with hitching posts in downtown Newark?
There are a lot of NJ members here on DK...how many of you have horses? How many of you even see a horse from week to week?
LOL
Whoa, them's fighting words. We may be small but we do have lots of great things we try to keep secret, successfully I see. I have one house within walking distance with horses and there are a number around town. That's in Bergen County within a short distance of the big apple. In northwest, central and southern NJ there are lots of horses. We're a huge producer of cranberries and blueberries , which make us an antioxidant capital I guess. I once saw NJ blueberries in Iceland! I could have part of a horse but I don't have quite enough land for a full horse. Downtown Newark has a great performing arts center and new arena but no hitching posts as far as I know. We have a beautiful seacoast. The NY Giants actually play here in NJ and so forth. What does Chicago have other than a lot of wind(bags)? : )
Whoa- What a great way to start that post! But that last sentence smarts a bit.
Chicago, Chicago, that toddlin' town...well, we used to have the world's tallest building, but I don't think that's true any longer. We do have a spectacular skyline and some amazing architecture. We are also Ol' Blue Eyes' kinda town. And, of course: "Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Jordan!"
Simmer down! I was only trying for a few laughs. I thought it was pretty funny, myself. Some of my best friends live in NJ. A few relatives, too. I wasn't ragging on NJ...just wondering about the horse connection.
Sorry to tell you, Kar, but Ol Blue Eyes was a Joisey Boy! Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, The Statue of Liberty is actually in NJ. Jersey Tomatoes, corn...da The Garden State, and our politicians can give your politicians some lessons. LOL Home to Princeton University.
I also have several horse farms within walking distance to me.
We have songs too:
Jersey Girl - Bruce Springsteen
How about Bruce's "My Hometown" about Freehold. (We won't mention "Born to Run")! What about the oldie "Palisades Park". I can't even remember who did that it's so old.
And Bon Jovi had a whole album called "New Jersey
Billy Joel Moving Out
Who needs a house out in Hackensack????
I Like Jersey Best by the Phil Bernardi Band
How about Uncle Floyd's "Deep in the Heart of Jersey"!!!
Bobby Darin did an updated version of How About You in which he sings "I like New Jersey in June, how about you?"
"Jersey Girl," by Tom Waits
"Wildwood Days," by Bobby Rydell
Some other famous NJ'ians: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Whitney, Houston, Jerry Lewis, Ice-T, Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Dionne Warwick, Danny Devito, Thomas Edison, Kevin Spacey, Steven Speilburg, Yogi Berra, John Travolta and Denzel Washington...Hello.
We don't think you were ragging on NJ but we are tired of being known for Newark, The Sopranos and "What Exit?" We got Horsies, too! LOL
Okay, okay already! Keep your darn horses! They're the competition!
Um, please do not complain to a Chicagoan about being known for The Sopranos, LOL. How about Al Capone, Frank Nitti, Bugsy Moran, Sam Giancana, The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, and The Untouchables, LOL. What do you think we're known for?
We've got famous gangsters, real and fictional, too. Tony Soprano is just one in a long line of them. I guess Chi'town and NJ do have a lot in common. We had a gay governor, who quit in disgrace and you had one with really bad hair, who quit in disgrace. LOL But you do have Oprah!
