I need some ideas on what to stuff Molly's kong with. I have tried peanut butter and she just doesn't seem to "love" it. I thought all dogs went crazy over peanut butter. Any suggestions on what to stuff kongs or hallow marrow bones with?
BTW--I know I ask a lot of questions but I love this site and everyone has been so extremely helpful. Thanks so much! :)
You can mix them together if the wet is too runny. The goal is to keep it in the bone or kong as it thaws out. I make my own homemade dog food and it is to a consistency of a stew. I add some of their dry to thicken it up in the bone. I put through the dishwasher when done. They last for hours if frozen.
My dishwasher has a low heat dry and I do put the bones and the kongs through it. Probably stay away from the heat, you dont want to melt or cook, either one.
I've done Low Fat Vanilla Yogurt (not sugar free but regular) and frozen it in the Kong. I seal off the edges with peanut butter, but you don't have to do that part. You could stuff a chunk of banana in the holes to seal it off before freezing.
Also mashed bananas with kibble or oatmeal. You can also stuff solid milkbones (broken up) or other dry treats of diff sizes and then squeeze in some cheeze whiz!
We also do not use peanut butter as one of our doodles has a 'messy' reaction. We have also used plain yogurt, also cream cheese, cheese, cottage cheese and mix it with whatever strikes us at the time. Some examples would be dog friendly fruits & veggies, baby food oatmeal or rice cereal, a bit of low sodium chicken broth, a bit of canned food and some kibble (I sometimes run the kibble through the blender just to give it a different consistency than their dry food). They especially like the addition of Orijens 6 fish, it is a little cost restrictive to use for their daily food, but we use them for treats all the time - both plain and in kong stuffings. We keep a bag just for this and ultimately it is better priced that most of the treats we would buy. We also like to freeze them.
ooh, some new yummy ideas!!! Thanks all!!! I make frozen yogurt/cheese treats in cupcake wrappers in muffin tins in the summer. They'd last longer in their kongs! Ziggy & Marley will be licking away this weekend! Lisa
Forgot to mention that a bit of applesauce with the stuffing mixture is good, also a bit of scrambled egg. And yes just in case you still have any doubt ~ the gang eats very well here =)
