So I knew that all puppies take some adjusting and I knew that I was going to be losing some sleep over the next couple of weeks. Hoping I could get some advice. I got a crate for Scarlet and divided it off. I tried to ease her into it last night to get her use to it. When it was bedtime....about 11, I put her in it. She yelped and yelped. I tried not to give in but after almost an hour I gave in and put her on the couch with me. She slept there for almost 5 hours. Did I mess everything up by taking her out of her crate?? I thought maybe because it was her first night home that she just didn't want to be by herself. I am not sure how to handle things tonight???? Should I let her sleep with me for a few nights until she gets adjusted or do I continue to listen to the crying?? What will be the best in the long run?? Thanks for any insight. Other than the sleeping, she has been an angel ....no whining and seems to be very happy here.

Thanks so much everyone for the words of advice and support. So happy to be a part of doodle kisses. I let Scarlet sleep on the couch with me last night and she only got up once. I have been putting her in her crate throughout the past couple of days...just a little bit at a time. She seems to be getting used to it. I think I might try again tomorrow night. She has truly been so good. I am just waiting for her to do something wrong but I am really surprised. I know it's early :) Thanks again for all the words of encouragement!!!

I had the same prob with Loki. He hated the crate and I couldnt stand the yelping/crying. He has slept with me from day one, we would set our alarm to take him out during the night and never had any problems. He is fully trained now so no need to get up in the night anymore. It is like having a new born...then turns into a toddler. My daughter has come to the conclusion that a puppy is more work than babies/kids Lol, id have to agree. But I know itll be worth it :)

Sorry, I don't have any pearls of wisdom. Just a hug. Your story reminds me of a puppy we had several years ago. She was a pistol. Hated the crate and would bark continuously if she knew I was in the house and could hear her, but if she were out of the crate, she had to be watched every second, cause she was into everything. I was so tired and wanted so much to take a nap, but I knew if I put her in the crate she would howl. One day I pulled into the garage after running an errand. Bonny was in the house in her crate and was quiet for once. I set my car seat to the recline position and took a nap in the car.

But pups are so worth it, aren't they?
They are for sure! There was a 10 week old lab in Petco today and it kinda made me wish Sam was still that size...then she pooped in the floor and I was happy to be through that stage!
Sam, who is 9 months now, never liked his crate. He would cry and cry. I slept on the floor next to him and everything. My breeder started him on crate training 2 weeks before I picked him up and she issued me a warning saying that he did not like the crate. The breeder said she never came a across a puppy who didn't learn to like it. One night, being so sleep deprived, I decided to just try having him on his bed in a pen next to my bed, that night he slept the whole night. He has never slept in his crate since and has always slept through the night. Around 5 months of age I removed the pen and he sleeps in random places in the house now. He is a mover at night and has never had an accident in the house. He usually starts out on his bed and then makes his way to the cooler hallway. He does not sleep in my bed and can only come up when I ask him to, very good boy! The crate just never worked for us.
