Tonight was just horrible. I don't want to get to descriptive because it was awful. First of all Lincoln ran after my cat outside, and rolled him, and thankfully Haku was okay and ran right back into the house, but then the next thing you know I hear this baby screaming sound, and I turn to see Lincoln has a baby rabbit in his mouth, and it's screaming and he won't drop it for me or leave it so I finally got a piece of chicken and he dropped it, but he was so badly injured. He didn't die right away either. I tried to save it, but it was too hurt. I called the vet, and they said they'd put it down for me, but the litlle guy didn't live. This was very traumatic for me and I cried so hard. The vets office told me that dogs do that. My dog Scott has chased a rabbit or two out of the yard, but never took a baby from it's nest. I didn't know I had a rabbits nest in my back yard. Anyway I found the nest, and there are still very new born babies in it, but I don't know if the mother rabbit will come back as Lincoln and now I was near it. I really hope she does. In the meantime thankfully I have the lead still in the ground so I am putting him on that in the meantime until they get a chance to leave. The vet told me that they don't know the difference between that and a squeak toy. I guess he has a strong prey drive which isn't good considering I have three cats. Lincoln is in the house with them all day, but he's in the kitchen, and nothing has happened so far. Do you think I need to worry? Sorry but I love all animals so this was very nerve wracking for me.

We raise rabbitsb we have about 200 adult rabbit. the babies should be fine just don't mess with them because the mom does scent humans. Normally if you touch the nest of a wild rabbit than the mom probly won't be back. It is best if you leave them alone. They should be fine. And you shouldn't. Worry. It's ok it happens some times. It is dogs nature to do that. But having it be the first time it would be hard.
Thanks Jubilee. I was feeling so good that they survived and left the nest only to come back in my yard for some stupid reason. I'm too soft for this rabbit trauma... I love all creatures big and small, but Lincoln's definitely pushing it...LOL
Poor Lincoln. If only they would stay away and stop tempting him. I'm sure it's very confusing for dogs when we try to keep them from chasing their natural prey.
Jackdoodle doesn't have much prey drive; when I first adopted him at 14 months, he actually didn't seem to know what a rabbit was. He seemed afraid of them the first time he saw one during a walk at night. Be glad Lincoln is a normal healthy doodle!
I know Karen. I felt so bad for him last night because he hasn't a clue what the fuss is about. Lincolndoodle continues to search for rabbits every time I put him outside. I do wish the rabbits would find another home. I saw Momma bunny this morning as I was taking Lincoln to the car to go to daycare. I told her I was sorry, but to keep her younguns out of my yard...LOL
You won't believe this but those darn rabbits put another nest in my backyard!!!! grrrrrrr I can't believe Lincoln didn't find this one. We have grass that is on steroids, and are lawn in the back grows so fast, and the rabbits love to make nests there I guess. My husband mowed the lawn and it was that same night that I saw the rabbit in my yard again. I wondered why it kept coming back into my yard!!!! Anyway low and behold there it was full of babies, but they are older than the one Lincoln got. Anyhow I've got Lincoln on a lead again until they move out, but I'm not liking this one bit!!!!!!! I put the sticks over it like the last time to see if she will come back to feed them because I scared her out of the yard not knowing she had babies there. I saw her this morning, but I think I scared her again. They are not too far from leaving the nest so hopefully she'll come back, and get them out of there soon!!!! I can't keep up!!! LOL
Diane, those have to be the stupidest rabbits in creation!
Once those babies are gone, I would maybe try that coyote urine powder sprinkled around to keep them from making another nest. Or plant marigolds or something they hate. This is ridiculous that these dumb bunnies keep stressing you & Lincoln!
I know I was thinking that I need to put a ton of marigolds around the perimeter of my lawn. I have a huge back yard though!!! I'd be better off throwing down seeds...LOL Is there such thing as a Scare Rabbit? I think it's the same mother as the last time!!!! I think I took too good care of those darn babies the first time. Oh yes and my neighbor is putting spinach out for them daily right near my fence. I asked her to put it on the other side of her yard, but she says her dog will get them then...yikes...
Wow, I'd really be PO'd at that neighbor. Why is she deliberately trying to attract rabbits to the area?
You know, there are things like "scare rabbits"...one of them is a big fake snake you put in your flower bed to keep rodent-y animals away. It's hideous looking and I don't know if it works or not. There are fake owls, too, that are supposed to keep their prey animals like mice, etc. away. My grandmother used to put pinwheels in her flower beds to scare the rabbits. But if a large dog doesn't scare them away...
She's not the sharpest knife in the drawer sorry to say...I can only imagine that my dogs would bark insanely at a scare owl or snake. They bark at the hot air balloons that go by our house, and Lincoln freaked out at the adirondack chair that got flipped over in the wind the other day. He's also afraid of th BBQ because his lead (that he was on the last time the rabbits were here) got caught underneath it and dragged it...those darn pesky rabbits...I'll think of something...
I too have a bunny burrow right outside my back door - in a rock retaining wall. Cooper knows they are there, and sometimes goes crazy when the bunnies run across the patio, but he has never come close to catching them. Probably because they only have to make it a few yards and they are in the rock retaining wall or outside the fence where he can't get them. They are driving me a little crazy, but....they are pretty cute!
Diane, I can't help but laugh at this. I have 5 impending nests but this time in my front yard. Sonny won't go near those. I don't get it with those Bunnies. You would think big furry creature... little furry creature. Helllllloooo... big furry creature wins!
OMG Ali! That's crazy. We are definitely being invaded..., and yes I can't figure out why they can't figure it out...
