Maine vacation with the doods!

I am excited about a weeklong vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine near Acadia National Park during the second week of September. I found a small house (they call it a cabin but it has a full kitchen and 2 bedrooms) that we can actually afford and...it is PET-friendly!! My husband isn't sure we can call it a vacation if we bring the dogs--but it is MY dream come true! I hope to bring two of the three--Lyric might be bred again by then, so she might be staying behind with the breeder--but Rio and Mattie are going for sure! There are tons of hiking trails, ponds for kayaking (Mattie loves to be in the kayak, but we haven't taken Rio out yet) and yummy seafood!

My husband turns 60 on Sunday, so I am giving him this trip as a birthday present--a little belated, but September is a great time of year up there--can't wait!

Ginny this is so cool, I just posted about a similar vacation we are planning here on the west coast for July. (only it is for Stella's birthday) I can not wait!

We rent a house at the beach during the Summer, and the Doods come with us.  It's a lot of fun...for us and the boys.  Bar Harbor is such a beautiful place....the best lobster rolls in the world!!! Sounds like a fun vacation, Ginny.

i vacationed there in 2001 and had a lovely time. of course this was before duncan. I'll have to go back. Please let us know how the trip pans out. My favorite part was the fresh blueberries. They grow all around and are delicious in pancakes for breakfast!

We took 3 dogs to the beach for a few days, stayed in a cottage.  And we took all 3 on a road trip to California (across 3 states)-- both went great!

Lucky doodles!!!! I just bet it will be the best vacation ever!! I wish all 3 could go and experience it!!

We don't take many vacations-if we did, we would try and take them with, I miss them too much!!!

We rented a cabin on a lake in Maine last year and absolutely LOVED it!!!  Allie had a great time.  She doesn't absolutely love the water, but did go in some.  My in-laws live in Maine, and I love it so much.  They are in Scarborough / Portland.  I haven't been to Bar Harbor, but saw some pamphlets at the cabin last year on Bar Harbor, and said that I wanted to go next time.  You will have a great time!

We often take Sedona on short vacations in our RV.  She travels really well except for the fact that her already inconsistent eating "schedule" becomes even more inconsistent.  I think that since the environment and routine are different, she's not positive that the next meal will come, so she puts off eating until she's super hungry.  Hopefully after a few more trips, she'll relax about the food.  Other than that, she's a great traveler.

I LOVE IT.  A vacation with dogs for your spouses bday.  My DH and I used the term "trip" when we took children, dogs, etc.  "Vacation" was used for when it was just the two of us.  We just took our first "vaca" in 5 yrs two weeks ago.  The rest have been "trips".  Still enjoyable, but more action, less relaxation on the trips.

Ginny - We took Banjo to Bar Harbor with us last September and had a wonderful time!    The town is VERY dog friendly, there were plenty of restaurants with outside dining that allowed dogs.   We met so many wonderful, friendly people.   I think every visitor there who left their dog at home stopped just to pat Banjo and tell us they wish they had their dog along too.

Arcadia is magnificent and if I remember correctly, dogs are allowed on the beach after Labor Day.  The hiking is endless too!    Be sure to visit Jordan Pond and after a nice hike have their pop-overs and lobster bisque on the lawn....it's heavenly!!!!

We rented a house in Bar Harbor last year with our doodle.  It was the best vacation we've been on.  So gorgeous and Acadia is fantastic for you and the dogs!  The house you are renting isn't by any chance called "The Red House?"  That was the one we rented from the homeaway website.  Bring the dogs into town...it is super pet friendly and they will get tons of attention...we actually ate dinner at a restaurant outside WITH our dog.  It was great!  This year we are renting a house in Tennessee and are bringing Seamus and our newest doodle, Stella.  I love traveling with the pups!  The car rides are long, but it's worth it once you get there!  Enjoy!! =)

No it is a cabin in Somesville on the other side of the island. It is just down the road from Somes Harbor off Rte 102. I did find this one on Home away, though.
