Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi, I'm new to the site. I am in Des Moines, Iowa and am one the list for a male from Mandy and Rusty's latest litter. I lost my great 13.5 year companion Sheltie, Ozy. Walter is our 4 year old male sheltie, not exactly alpha, but will barge in front of another dog.
MY QUESTION: Should I get a male or female doodle? Whichever, it should be accepting and laid back. A high energy dog would not be a good choice.

Thanks,

Bob

Good Morning Bob,

I recently lost my shihtzu of 17 years which was the most laid back dog, not hyper, well trained, no better dog.  Decided to get another dog, because of the non shed issue, however, if u do not want a high energy dog this is not for you a Doodle, this dog gets two long walks a day in the park and also intween walks to calm down and relax her.  She is a great dog but is time consuming I am now trying to address the jumping on family and visitors coming into house.  This is a tough one.   I must keep in mind that she is only 4 months old and needs alot of attention at this poing, between training, mischievous always, I woulod never give a moment up love her so much, she definitely looks for love from me constantly, but a job.

As a breeder, Ive done lots of research on this question.  To sum it up this is what the research says.  Keep in mind, this is research gathered from surveys.

Female dogs tend to bond with one person in the family.  Male dogs tend to bond with the whole family.  spayed females get along best with a spayed male.  Neutered males get along with female or male.  Females can be moody..  Males are more consistant in their behavior.

I have two standard therapy dogs.  One is female, one is male.  I find the male to be totally consistant whenever we are on visits.  The female always behaves but sometimes she is enthusiastic and sometimes not.

I have both sexes of dogs and find they are both wonderful.  I dont have a preference for male or female.

I find my male and female to be exactly the way Lynne described hers. My female is definitely My dog and could care less about where anyone else is in the family. My Male spreads the Love evenly!!!! They are both very good. I did call my vet and she suggested a male(he is neutered) with my spayed female. I honestly feel that Ellie would have gotten along with Either. My Male is NOT a marker even on walks, actually my female is more of a sniffer and marker than he is. My Ellie is "2" and Oliver is "1". Good Luck with your decision!!!! :)

Funny but Stanlee is a combination of high energy and laid back.  He gets very excited when someone comes home or we have a visitor but that last about 5 minutes then it's over.  He has a "run" about the yard when he first goes out but then wanders at a slower pace after about 5 minutes.  He and his brother wrestle in the mornings but that lasts about (you got it) 5 minutes.  He may roam around the house looking for something and never finding what he wants but after awhile he comes to where I am and just chills out and naps.

I'm no expert but It seems that the larger doodles tend to be laid back more often than the medium and mini doodles are.
