Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone. I currently have a 2 yr. old Male Golden doodle named Brewster. He is a joy and very easy to train. I have had all male dogs my whole life and never had a female before. We recently got a baby sister for Brewster. Her name is Daisy. She is also a golden doodle. She is not at all easy to potty train. Can anyone tell me if females are generally harder to train, or is it just the puppy difference. We have tried everything and she does go outside, however, she is still having accidents. We take her out like every hour, to hour and a half. She can hold it all night without an accident so I know she can hold it. We praise, treat and toilet the dogs separately as the puppy gets easily distracted. We give water throughout the day as needed, and hold water after 8PM. She has long play times outside between potty breaks to allow her to also relieve herself. I have never had such problems with any of my previous dogs. Within 3 months totally trained and no accidents. So I am in a quandary if it is just the X chromosome here? She is almost 5 months old....is this common? Any suggestions?

Not typical of females at all. If anything, they're usually easier & faster to housebreak than males, IMO.

Thanks! I will have to try something different with her. She is a sneaky little pee body! I just do not know what.

If you haven't already, I would take Daisy to the vet and have her checked for a UTI.  We had the same problem with Myla when she was a puppy.  She would go outside, come in the house and 10 minutes later go on her bed.  I didn't think it was a UTI because she was going all night without an accident but after a while of this, I took her to the vet and she did have a UTI.  I felt so bad that I had left it that long as they are so painful.  If you have already ruled out a UTI, another suggestion is to make sure that you thoroughly disinfect the area where she has gone so that she isn't attracted to the scent.  Good luck.

Update: Took a urine sample in to the vet for our Daisy. She does have a urinary tract infection. Thank you for the information! She is already doing better with her potty training!

I'm so glad you took her to the vet! Good call, Wendy!

That's great!!  It's so hard to believe it's a UTI when they hold it all night long - but I guess that's where they are different from us :)
