Just curious at what age did you owners start noticing, if at all, when your doods began marking outside? I have an 8 month old male ALD, and he still squats to pee. I am hoping this continues... Are there any tricks to train him not to mark if I do notice he starts to lift his leg?
My LD was neutered at 5 months old and began marking at 14 months old. He only does it outside on walks though, never in the house. I don't think you can stop them if they begin to lift a leg, it is a purely male thing to do. They can learn by seeing another dog lifting a leg and copying them, or I read somewhere that a more dominant male is more likely to go on to mark. I think the only way to get a dog that is guaranteed to squat is to have a female (although there are females that lift their leg to pee)!
Other than INSIDE the home,
I've come to consider marking, for BOTH males and females,
as a kind of graffiti.
Ya know---"I WIZZED HERE" kinda message. LOL!
In the end, it's just an important component of communication.
