I always have let Max go outside when he wants, and like others have said praise the heck out of her when she goes potty. It took Max about three weeks to be solidly potty trained, and he hasn't had an accident inside in over three months. Every puppy is different of course, but I think being outside to play lots is good for Piper, and as long as you are vigilant in the house she won't get confused. :)
We have the same thing and spend lots of time outside during the day, but at night, I just open the door and he runs out, goes potty, and comes right back in. Keep a towel by the back door and I wipe their feet and their bodies when it is wet outside. You are so lucky to have a nice fenced backyard. Think about taking them out on leash for a night run! So glad we do not have to do that.
Oh yeah, welcome to DoodleKisses - the best website around for doodle lovers everywhere. Take a look around and join some groups that are interesting to you. Maybe Puppy Madness and a group for your area. It is a great place to learn about doodle romps and they will be coming up this spring (if spring ever gets here!).
Hi everyone...I am fairly new to DK also. Little Miss Ivy and I are happy to be here.
Little Miss Ivy was a rescue. She is almost 4 months old. She was born outside in our bitter cold Canadian winter, and lived in a small pen with her parents and litter mates. Being outside was all she ever knew until one month and 6 days ago.
I was very concerned about this and how quickly she would take to potty training.
Although I did buy a crate for her, I never had the heart to crate her and have never crated any dog I' be ever owned. This time round, with Miss Ivy, I decided to train her to ring a bell when she needed/ wanted to go outside.
I hung little sleigh bells at all my doors, so that she could reach them either with her nose, or with her little paws. Although there was the occasional piddle accident in the house, she got the hang of ringing those little bells in record time, about a week ( 5 days). All I did was take her little paws and ring the bells, at all the doors, so that she realized she could make them jingle herself.
I thought Miss Ivy would be confused also, because she was never in a house until the day I brought her home. But with round the clock vigilance and taking her to the doors every few hours to ring the bells, and putting her out immediately, and praising her to no end when she came back in, she made mama very, very proud.
