Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have a feeling I might get teased for bringing this up, but I'm too curious to resist.  I found this site looking for factual information and have found so much more - including an opportunity to contribute in a way that might help others. Now I'm pretty much hooked.

It dawned on me a few days ago that the vast majority of people on here are women.  I did see a discussion group for men, but it didn't seem very popular or active.

Don't get me wrong - I'm definitely not one to complain about being surrounded by too many women.  I am curious as to why people think this might be the case, though.

Are doodles more popular with women?  I never noticed that to be true, although now that I think about it, my ex was the one who discovered the breed.

Or maybe it's because many doodles are owned by couples, and the woman is the one primarily responsible for its care?

Or maybe it's just more in the nature of women to communicate about these things - in other words, the same reason women like to ask for directions when they are lost and men like to figure it out on their own?

I really don't know. I'm interested in hearing what other people think.

Holy cow, look what I started.  As soon as I started to type this response, Lola got up and walked into the kitchen.  Like oh great, now it's going to be FOREVER until I get some attention around here.  I'm going with the "lawyer brief” approach for this one.

1.  Thank you so much to all of you for your inclusiveness, kind words and support.  A few days ago we found someone trolling this site, and I had a response kind of like someone was picking on my little sister.  That was my first clue that this was about something more than just factual information.

2. This topic may have significance beyond doodle-rearing. It seems to me that our society as a whole has a lot of work to do as far as learning how to communicate.  Whether politicians on TV or friends on Facebook, there's a lot of preaching to the choir but not enough healthy discourse.  DK definitely is helpful as a resource for factual information, but what is really special is the overall sense of supportiveness and mutual respect.  People don't just answer questions, they follow up a few days later to ask how the other person is doing.  Sometimes they disagree, but it's almost always in a fundamentally respectful manner.  This is particularly impressive in light of how many potential land mines there are when people talk about dogs.  People tease - such as some of you have in your responses below - but it's almost always gentle and good-natured ribbing that belies love, trust and respect.

(Lola just showed up with her leash ... must type faster...)

3.  Yes, dog forums probably do have more women than forums about guitars, hunting, etc.  Probably this is to some extent because of families where women are the ones responsible for taking care of the dogs (kids), but also because the dog world in general is largely (mostly?) women.  Think about the career "dog trainer", as compared to "doctor" or "nurse".  Is it a stereotypically male or female occupation?  I am not sure.

4.  Men do share information online, but they do it differently.  In fact I have a thread going right now on Facebook about portable air conditioners.  Several guy friends of mine have chimed in with their thoughts, which were very helpful.  They were just more factual and to-the-point.   Frankly it would be weird if any of them were to email me again in a week to ask if I had succeeded in getting my office to an acceptably cool temperature and expressing their joy when I told them I had.  Maybe the one female friend whose comment was something to the effect that I should go to Home Depot and look for the ones that kind of look like small R2-D2s.

5.  I think the fact that there are so many women on here account for a lot of the softness, thoughtfulness, supportiveness and overall positive vibe.  It reminds me of a study I once saw about the differences between graffiti in men's and women's washrooms.  However, I think the doodles themselves also deserve some credit.  Who wouldn't be happy coming home to that wet nose and wagging tail?  Of course that translates into positive interactions with others.

6.  I must confess, I do not know what an Intercourse Shirt is.  I wonder, though, have any couples met on here?  If so, please identify yourselves.

7.  I know it was just teasing, but the comments about "my doodle is bigger than your doodle" are actually kind of profound I think.  Men do strange things to prove their masculinity or heterosexuality.  Growing up, I never understood a lot of what went on in the locker room or fraternity or why they were so concerned about who might be gay or not masculine enough.  Always seemed to me there are enough actual problems in the world to worry about without making things up.  I even remember getting some nervous, disbelieving responses a few weeks ago when I told people I was getting into dog grooming, though.  I love my dog and want her to look her best.  What’s so hard about that?  I would point out, however, I see a lot of owners of “manly” dogs that don’t seem to have the slightest clue how to communicate with them.  That doesn’t seem particularly manly to me, especially when the dog attacks and injures a person or another dog.

8.  Sorry for any typos. It's getting late and Lola is about to throw my laptop off the balcony.

Jay, #4 made me laugh and if you don't want to find yourself posing in the infamous intercourse t-shirt, do not submit any captions for the next photo caption contest. Here is a link to how it got started.

ha - thanks for the fair warning! :)

Okay, how did you make this loop?

Okay, inspired by Pat and Traveler, I'm pleased to announce the launch of a great new doodle site.  Please check it out:

Ha.

Love it.

I know nothing about computers, how did you do that??  Can you just make up a web address and tie it to any site?

Apparently.

Actually what these guys did is insert a link directing you to DK.   You can also type "http://" typewhatever you want with no spaces followed by a ".com"  This will automatically be put into a "link" type format, it just won't take you anywhere when you click on it.  Like this:

http://ilovemydogsomuchimadethislinkthatgoesnowhere.com

If you want to learn how to insert an actual link, let me know, it's really not difficult.
