The recent lost doodles listed on DK reminded me that I just saw a piece on shelters. Many of the dogs shelters get now are microchipped. Unfortunately, many of these microchips are not registered making them useless in trying to locate the dogs' families. It is vital to register your dog's microchip immediately and to remember to change the information if you move. I wonder if everyone has registered or if anyone has a rescue doodle that had an unregistered microchip.
When I got Lucy I knew nothing about all of this up to date stuff. She was Chipped when I got her and thank God, the breeder told me exactly what to do. She already registered her under the breeders name and as soon as I got her home I was to update them on the change, which I did. I always forget though when I have her to the vet to have them scan it to make sure it is still in place and working. Must do that !!! This is a good point that you brought up because alot of new puppy/dog owners may not realize that you must register them. Thanks
Yeah, I must admit , when I moved I forgot to re- register my new address for quite a while. I've also never had Christy's chip checked by the vet either. For all I know it may not be working at all .
Jack's microchip was registered to the shelter where I adopted him, and they gave me all the necessary paperwork & instructions to change the registration. It's a good idea to have a reminder about this. Having the chip checked occasionally when you're at the vet is a good idea, also.
My vet registers them as soon as they put them in with all of the owners information. They will also update them if the owner moves, so that's really nice. I didn't have to do anything!
I just wanted to share that when Gaston-Cramer was micro chipped, our vet's office said that they would register him with all our information and we didn't have to do a thing. I blindly thanked them for doing that and never thought to verify if it had been done correctly. By sheer chance I had the opportunity to verify the information via an email I received from the locator company and low and behold NOTHING was correct! So just as a head's up....verify with the locator company once your pups are registered that everything is correct. The kicker is that even once I changed all the information with the locator company on the phone it was still wrong when I pulled up his locator # on their website! LOL
We are also going out of town soon and taking Gaston-Cramer with us.....we are going to have his chip checked to make certain it's still "reading" before we go.
