Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi! My name is Kristin, and my fiancé and I just brought home our adorable mini-Goldendoodle puppy, Poogan! He is 8 weeks old, and he already weights 10.5 lbs. Is this normal weight for a mini? The vet said she thought it would be more characteristic of a standard Goldendoodle. When we met the breeder 3 weeks ago, we met both of Poogan's parents. The mom was a large golden retriever, and the dad was a black mini poodle, maybe 30 lbs?

There are no guarantees on size with mini doodles, and it's pretty hard to tell at 8 weeks old how big he might get. Many people here whose "mini doodles" were expected to be in the 25-30 lb range ended up with dogs over 50 lbs. I'm not sure what type of Poodle Poogan's sire was, but Miniature Poodles don't weigh 30 lbs, ever. Typically, F1 mini litters are sired by much smaller Poodles, usually in the 12-15 lb range. With a full size Golden as the dam, your pup might well end up more standard size than mini. As we always say, doodles are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

Thank you!

Did the breeder give you any estimate of how much Poogan will weigh when fully grown?  My "mini" F1 goldendoodle weighed 5.15 lb at 8 weeks old and is expected to be 30-40 lb.  Her golden retriever dam weighs 40 lb, and her sire is a moyen poodle weighing 20 lb.

He did! He said 35-40lbs fully grown. His mama was 50 lbs, and his dad was 30lbs. Obviously, if he is a Standard, and not a mini, we will love him just the same! I was just curious to see how he grows, and I might have to keep size in mind whenever we are looking to get a new apartment! I guess maybe I should have known the 30lbs is not a "mini" poodle, but I'm not super familiar with the different types of poodles, and the sire did look small compared to other poodles! Regardless, our breeder was a very nice young man so I wouldn't be mad if baby Poog was a Standard!

I have Katie's growth chart. I was a little bit obsessed with my girl. She's a mini F1b. Mom is a 65 pound goldendoodle. Dad was a mini poodle. He was pretty little. At 8 weeks Katie weighed 5.8 pounds. She's currently 29 pounds at full grown and filled out. People always give the estimate to double their weight at 16 weeks and then add 5 pounds. Katie was exactly 12 pounds at 16 weeks, so that formula worked strangely perfectly for us. I actually wanted her to be a little bigger, so I was like, grow puppy, grow! I don't know how big your pup will be, but I suspect he will be bigger than Katie. He's so cute!

Thank you!

We brought Annabelle home at 10 weeks and she weighed 4lbs. Her average weight as an adult is 15lbs. Her mom was a golden doodle and weighed 30lbs and her dad was a mini poodle and weighed 11lbs.

It will be interesting to see what size doodle you end up with! I am prepared for the possibility that mine could end up larger than expected.

Trying to remember Ned's size when he was a puppy and I think your pup is probably 3 pounds heavier than he was at that age. Ned is a large mini, but still a technically mini - 16 1/2" at the shoulder and 28-29 pounds.  I think your pup will be at least a medium.  Just my guess, but he most definitely is not going to but the 15 - 20 pound size that they are breeding as minis nowadays.  I hope that your building doesn't have size requirements that are enforced.

I have a "medium" goldendoodle.  Dad 28 lbs, mom 48, expected size 40-50 lbs.  On the previous 3 litters, they all were 40-50 lbs.  Dante was 10.5 at 8 weeks, and now weighs 33 at 4 months.  I fully expect him to be 60-65 lbs.  with the size of your pup's parents, no way will that be a mini, IMO.

with a cross breed, it's a roll of the genetic dice.
