Murphy will be 16 weeks tomorrow and we are still having a horrible time with night time whining. His crate is out in the kitchen right now. Last night, he was walked at 12:15 but was still up at 1:20 barking and whining and going nuts. I finally gave in and took him outside because I'm worried he'll wake the kids who have to be up early for school. After he went out (no talking, no playing, simply out then right back into crate) he barked for 45 minutes. He woke again at 3:30 and did the same thing. At what point to I ignore this behavior? Also, do you think I should move the crate into my room during the night then back out to the main room in the house during the day? I'm desperate for sleep!
Chewie is 19 weeks and his crate has been in my bedroom since we got him at 8 weeks. Since the second night he sleeps from approx. 10 at night to between 7 & 7:30 am...never a peep out of him. I don't move the crate during the day as I have an x pen to contain him if I need to while I am home, and if I need to go out, he goes in the crate in my room. I would actually love to have the crate in another room, but don't want to chance upsetting a good thing.

Thank you ALL for your help!! This site has saved me so many times in just the few short weeks that we have had Murphy!
I am happy (and relieved!) to report that I did move the crate to my room last night and had success! I'm almost scared to tell you guys this because I'm afraid I'll jinx it! For the first time since he came home, he slept through the night!! I was exhausted so I didn't make it until that 11:00 pm walk that we usually do but I did take him out at 9:30 then put him in the crate. I woke up several times to the sound of him rolling over or whatever but he never peeped and the crate was totally dry when my alarm woke us at 6:30!! Fingers crossed it wasn't a one time thing and we have success from now on! Here's to sleep!!
Lilly cried for 3 nights when we got her, then we put the crate beside our bed and she was fine. I would still have to take her out in the middle of the night ,but she went right back to sleep. I think she knew we were right beside her.. After a short time I left her out of the crate and got a bed for her and she never had to be crated at night anymore.
Oh My, I am so glad u put the crate in your room....We had the same problem with Ollie and when I moved the crate in our room, after I slept in the den with him one night and he slept thru the night,he slept thru the night for the first time in 12 weeks...He now hears the words nite nite and in he runs to his crate every night...He ususally falls asleep around 9:30-10 pm, in the den with us, but I wake him at around 11:30pm, walk him and we both go to sleep, he is quiet until 6:30 am, and thats when hubby walks him, and then he feeds him and then puts him back in crate in our room, so I can get some more sleep, usually till around 8:30 am...But you see it worked, and you will not be jinxing anything...He needs to know u are there....Ah, the feeling of a good nights sleep, lol...Cheryl
I didn't read the other posts/suggestions yet, but what has worked for us; from day one, is to have a nice, BIG kennel in our bedroom that has a puppy pad folded in half in the back half of the kennel, and a round, comfy dog bed in the front. She has only pooped on the pad once in 3 weeks, and has never barked or whined in the middle of the night. A couple times when we forgot to remove the food/water bowls before 6pm, I heard her collar jingling around, and so I let her outside, and sure enough, she peed & pooped. The kennel that she came in from the Breeders' (a little smaller), I keep in the living room and when I have to go somewhere that I can't take her during the day, she goes in there. For me, I didn't want to be doing nay moving of kennels, so this way, she has a little "safe spot" where she can retreat for respite from my for kids in two different places, both on the main level of the house. (She can go up stairs, but not down...it's too funny) Hope this helps, good luck!
