I know this isn't a desirable topic, but we really need advice! We feed our sweet little boy purina one and he seems to really like it, however, he has the worst gas ever! I asked my vet's office and they said that it can be normal. Has anyone else had this problem? I can't imagine it's comfortable for him and it's really embarrassing when we have company over! I didn't think that there were fillers in purina one that would cause this, but I might be wrong!? Should I change foods?
Which one is your favorite? We're going to pick up a bag tomorrow! I went to the dog food analysis website and could not believe how much junk was in the stuff we were feeding Timbow!
Dan and Judi, please join the Food Group here on DK. We have a very large, active membership and extensive discussions and recommendations on commercial dog foods.
The Food Group does not recommend any of the Purina products. You can do much better. http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup
Thank you! I will join it now! Our vet recommended Purina to us and I've been feeling like I need to switch. I have done so much research the past couple of days and we're going to switch to Canidae and I'm going to make some homemade food for him as well.
We switched Whopper from Organix (the breeder started this one) to Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy. However, after a month of crazy gas episodes on Solid Gold, we have switched to Wellness and we haven't had the stinky gas issues anymore so foods can definitely make a difference from our experience.
As Adina mentioned, we use Canidae and like it. The dogs really like it and no gas. But there might be other causes of the gas, too. Does Timbow chew on rawhide bones? Those can give dogs gas like crazy. We are a rawhide free home because of it. :-) I'm sure our dogs would like rawhide bones again but they like the sterilized and stuffed natural bones and Nylabones. And our noses are much happier. Not to mention the lack of rawhide slime on everything + possible chemical contamination in the rawhide... we don't miss 'em!
Make sure you do a gradual changeover to the new food (over the course of a week+) so the new food doesn't upset their stomachs as they get used to it.
Thanks Clark! Timbow has never had a rawhide bone in his life! I heard that they don't digest them at all so we've never given them to him(this way he doesn't know what he's missing--or not missing). We stick to natural bones too. I'm hoping the Canidae does it because he's really stinky! haha.
Hi, I agree with getting a better food. But if you ad a tbsp of vinegar, you can reduce the gas. Put it in DH's coffee too LOL PUppy love from JOy & furry folk
