Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

How do you know if your goldendoodle will shed? My breeder told me he would be low to non shedding but I was wondering if there were any other coat indications?
More curl= less shedding?
more straight= more shedding?

Is that right?

I hope not since he's kinda wavy but that's it!

Thanks, Wendy

It's more complicated than curl or no curl. Most doodles will be curlier than they were as pups. So if a pup starts off curly...you can BET it will be VERY curly as an adult. If it starts off flatter...it may get wavier. If it starts off wavy it will likely get more curls.

However, my F1 labradoodle has LOTS of curly parts (not tight curls, but loose ones) and he still leaves a nice fur imprint on my black and brown pants =)

I think a non-shedding pup is more likely to become a non-shedding adult...but occasionally shedding diminishes as the adult coat comes in. But curl alone is no guarantee. Nonshedding coats have no undercoat and the coat will grow and grow and grow like human hair (which doesn't shed). Shedding doodles typically don't have coats that grow forever...thus instead of endless hair growth, the hair sheds.

As an example...my friend adopted a poodle mix from rescue. This pup had a gorgeous, soft, long, fluffy, non-curly coat as a pup...it did NOT shed at all. Now as an adult, this dog looks like 100% poodle...tight curls that can not be kept long because of matting.
