My new puppy (9 wks) just absolutely loves to eat. I feed her in her kennel while Fergie is slowly eating hers - nibbling a little at a time. Little Lucy quickly chomps down all her food - I don't know why she doesn't throw up - she eats so fast. When open the kennel door, Lucy races over to where Fergie eats to see if there's any morsel left. This happens 3 times a day. I always free-fed Fergie but certainly can't do this with Lucy. So now can't do Fergie anymore either. Fergie's OK with that. Anyone else has a little pig puppy?

My dachshund had this problem. She would inhale her food and then let out a nice big burp. Nice, huh? We were in PetSmart a few weeks ago looking for a bowl for our new doodle and saw a "slow down bowl". It has little barriers in it or looks like it's separated into 5 sections. We got one. It absolutely worked! Just a suggestion.
First this breeder who teaches his dogs to gulp their food and water, does it probaby because he does not have the proper time to spend with his 500+ animals feeding them properly. They are also caged 2 to 3 in a cage and probably fight for their food, so they have to gulp it if they want to eat. Also a dog that eats its meal in less than 1 minute is a prime canidate for Bloat. Yes you might say it never bothered my dogs, but there is always a first time. How would you feel getting your food and eating it in less than a minute. I don't think I could even chew my food quick enough to eat it that fast, and to have whole food sitting in my stomach must be very hard on the digestive system. Hannah is a real nibbler of food, and Honey likes to eat, but not a gulper, Hannah will eat when she is hungry enough and does not walk away from her food when she is hungry. You might want to try adding a little bit of yogurt over the food so Fenway eats better, and put some larger stones in the pups bowl to slow them down and this might also give Fenway the idea to stay at her bowl longer and she isn't missing anything because the pup is at their bowl eating also. Kinda like kids, you can't put food in front of one and expect them to eat while the other one gets to sit and play games on a computer or t.v. Hope this helps you....Denise...HannahNHoney
Thanks! You're right. Fenway does eat better when I put yogurt over her food. I'll have to start doing that again and see how she does. I may try the stone thing too. He obviously doesn't get as much at one time as Fenway so he's going to eat it more quickly no matter what, but slowing down the little pig might not be a bad idea.
You sound exactly like me. After having Fergie be such a grazer, this little pig just blows me away. The great thing training is easier - she'll do anything for food - and any kind of food.
